My nephew is 6'2. Since he's been back from Afghanistan, he's been a fairly serious young man. Hondo 'watches' him. Sometimes I notice Hondo giving him the stink eye. I've been really careful between the two. It's been two months since my nephew moved in with me. So far, it's been peaceful, but I've been careful.
Tonight, Hondo was laying on the floor just inside the living room. He can see me at the computer. My nephew came walking out of the kitchen, didn't see Hondo and tripped right over him. He attempted not to land on Hondo by rolling over him, landing on his back with his legs up. Hondo's head ending up in his crotch. My nephew froze. Hondo never moved. Didn't jump, didn't leap out of the way. He remained laying down. They both looked at me. I busted out laughing. My nephew started laughing...and Hondo? He laid his head over in my nephew's lap. I think they are going to be just fine.

I was really concerned with Hondo. There is a slight dark side to my nephew, I suppose there will be for a while (because of Afghanistan). I suspect Hondo senses that. My nephew isn't ready to speak freely about it, and I don't push him. This morning while we were getting ready for work, I was in my bedroom and normally Hondo is in there with me. He got up and walked down the hall. I heard my nephew say, "Morning" to him. I guess Hondo went to him. I snuck down the hall to take a peek and my nephew was sitting in the living room checking his emails. Hondo was laying on the floor next to him. I would find it a tremendous blessing if Hondo is able to help my nephew with his healing process. Even if its just a little. I grow weary of all the posts regarding "will my GSD protect me?", they have the ability to do so very much more, if we just let them.

I truly believe that animals have sixth senses about things and I think that maybe Hondo senses that your nefew is starting to come out of his shell so to speak and it's ok to start warming up to him a little bit. I'm sure in no time they will be best buddies. I am glad that you were able to provide your nefew with a home, bless you for taking him in.

Great story! I believe that all dogs have the power to really see what humans need but GSDs I think have that to the nth power. Hondo may be able to see the pain your nephew feels and is able to approach him on your nephews terms.Hats off to both you and Hondo and your nephew for serving his country.
