I admit, I am the Queen of corner cutting when I'm attempting to save time. Therefore, it's a natural thing for me to feed Hondo his raw breakfast in his kennel....in our bedroom. It makes sense to me. He eats his food, supervised, while I continue to get ready for work. Maggie, the mini doxie gets a milk bone. She happily eats it next to Hondo's kennel.
I've never had a problem with either dog being food aggressive. But honestly, I've never taken any chances. One bite from Hondo could do a great deal of harm to Maggie. And the fact that Maggie thinks she's a big dog in a little dog coat, doesn't help matters any. So I make sure Hondo is neatly locked away in his kennel when he eats his breakfast. This morning things happened a bit differently. Running a bit behind, but keeping to the 'norm' I went to the freezer, got his breakfast (he loves frozen chicken quarters) while he bounced and bounded towards his kennel. Hondo jumped into his kennel, I put his breakfast before him and then shut and locked the kennel. I turned, tossed the milk bone to Maggie and sat down to start working on the make-up. That's when I heard that little voice in the back of my head. The one that says, something just ain't quiet right. Looking though my makeup mirror, I saw the milk bone still on the bedroom floor, untouched. I turned and called Maggie. Nothing. Then that voice again. I didn't hear Hondo chomping on his chicken. I looked at Hondo, he was sitting up with his breakfast untouched between his paws. I jumped up and called Maggie....and I heard a little whimper...just barely...and I looked in the kennel..... There partially behind Hondo and partially under Hondo was Maggie. She was looking towards the wall as if to say, "If he doesn't see me, he won't notice me." Hondo, on the other hand was looking at me like "SERIOUSLY? Now I have to eat with her?" Ooops. My bad. I opened the kennel door, called Hondo out....Maggie ran out ....let Hondo back in and then locked the kennel door again. Maggie grabbed her milk bone as if it were the crown jewels. Hondo plopped down in the kennel, snatched up his chicken and I swear, I think he rolled his eyes at me.
