I spent all afternoon calling butchers in my area to see where I could buy chicken necks and carcasses from. Juno's been doing well with the Raw diet and I obviously want to give her more variety for her RMBs than just chicken thighs/legs. I was very disappointed to discover that no butchers in my area even do their own butchering any more. They get everything sent to them by their suppliers all ready cut up. (WTH?? Why are they called "butchers" then? That makes them no different than supermarkets. But I digress. That's a rant for another day.
) Consequently, NONE of them carry necks or backs. I nearly gave up when I came across a company that supplies meats in bulk to various ethnic restaurants here in Ireland. I believe the sales rep says their meats come from Thailand. They do 10 kilo boxes of chicken necks and carcassas for 7 euro. Legs are 16 euro. They do similar weight/price for hearts and livers as well, but I haven't got the freezer space. I actually don't know how I'm gonna fit in everything I've ordered already, but I'll find a way. Must say, I'm delighted with this. Feeding yourself a decent diet in Ireland is expensive. Feeding your dog a decent diet in Ireland is atrocious. I really hope these turn out to be ok, and not crap quality. Watch this space! |

Chicken arrived this morning. The legs arrived fresh and unfrozen and were MASSIVE. Much bigger than ones in the supermarkets, and they included part of the back bone, which most butchers remove for tray packed supermarket legs, which was a definite plus.
The carcasses and necks were brilliant too. They all had their wings and there was loads of meat on them. The only downside was I had to ice pick everything apart into smaller portions as they were frozen, (easy with the carcasses, not so easy with the necks - which came in their own separate box.) but that wasn't too bad. Took me about an hour. So for any future and or existing Irish dog owners out there that wish to feed their dog Raw food, but find the cost a bit too excessive, this Poultry In Motion company is definitely the way to go. |
