Default Proud of the vet recep. for discouraging BYB

I took Rocky to the vet yesterday to get his heartworm medicine and there was a guy with a beautiful golden retriever. It was obviously outside of the breed standard for height and weight, but it was still gorgeous. I complimented the guy (about my age, 21 or so) on his dog and he said:

"Well if you want a puppy, I'm breeding him to my neighbors golden when she goes into heat. The puppies are going to be 800 each".

I was like "Wow! What titles have you gotten on him for the puppies to be so expensive?" And he looks at me blankly. "You know, to prove that he is worthy of studding? So you can tell his puppies will be good?" And he goes "OH!! Well I didn't do that because he learned sit in 5 days, down in about a week, and all his other tricks in about a week. I can already tell how smart he is." I nodded my head slowly, then asked "He is atleast AKC registered right?" and he goes "Well, actually I bought him from this guy off craigslist and he said both the parents were AKC but he couldn't afford to get the puppies papers".

I didn't know what to say next, and that's when the vet receptionist stepped in.

"Well, when you have 10 puppies and no one will buy them because they don't have papers feel free to put a poster up that says "free puppies" on the board back there. Unfortunately, there are so many puppies bred in peoples bacyards that it might take a few months to give them all away"

I couldn't believe she said it...but then I realized it was the receptionist that is the head vet's wife. hahahaha I couldn't believe she put him in his place like that....until he left and she saw my face and told me "this is the third dog in two years that he has bred then the dog disappeared and reappeared in the shelter after he got the stud fee and a new puppy. we don't condone that here"

Now I know you shouldn't 'gossip' with your clients, but obviously the guy is doing this with no shame, so he deserved it.

What do you do when someone says they are breeding two dogs with no papers, health checks, or titles? Do you actually try to teach them? I always ask them questions to try to show them they shouldn't breed, but in all honesty I don't feel like it is my place to be like "YOU ARE A BACKYARD BREEDER! YOU SHUOLDN"T BREED YOUR DOG". Maybe it's just because I'm from Texas and I was brought up to mind my own business and be polite to strangers lol

Unfortunately this is not true at all. He can get at least $400 each because everyone wants a Golden puppy
I mean...look how many folks come on here w/out papers even (or faux registry) and have spent at least that much on a GSD puppy?

Well Done! Kudos to you AND the receptionist.

Thats what I was thinking. I know that the litter my pup came from was all sold by the time they were 7 weeks old. No papers, nothing.

Right, people will pay for a purebred puppy, papers or no. I think the receptionist said it purely as a hopeful discouragement, but if this gentleman has done this in the past, I'm sure he's aware that he can get money for the pups (and if he's got the stud, what does he care if the pups get sold right away or not? it's the bitch's owner who will be caring for them).

Exactly. I wonder if he is getting a stud fee or a percentage of the puppy sales (not that I really care). He is just using his dog to bring more BYB puppies into the overcrowded dog world.

And if he charges $800 then people know he is a better breeder because his dogs are more expensive.
