Default Competitive/Jealous Geriatric

My 18-month-old, Rey, has been in the household about 8 weeks now and is allowed off-leash in the house. She pesters me so I let her chew on her Kong, which she drops on my feet, in my lap, etc. while I work, and I mindlessly throw it into the next room to keep her busy. She tries to engage Buddy to play with her, dropping it on his pillow where he lays, but he ignores it or grouchily gets up. Funniest thing today: Rey stood barking at me to throw it from my office chair and when I looked up, 14-year-old Buddy was standing next to her all alert (Buddy has not wanted to chase his purple spiny ball for at least 2 years now), and acting like he was in on the game. Out of curiosity, I threw the Kong and guess who caught it? Buddy! He let Rey have it back. It wasn't about the Kong, it was about me playing with her. He was jealous. I put Rey up awhile and he actually chased me around the couch after his purple spiny ball. hahaha Like having two kids.

That's too funny! I can relate....we have an older female, and she hasn't wanted to play much for a couple years- she'll go get the ball, then goes and lies down with it, she's done, lol. We adopted Jaeger in june 2010, and he was 17 months at the time- Very rambunctious, playful, you name it. Plus he just towers over her in size. Well, they got along pretty well from the first, but she's just now getting jealous over him playing with us- he will bring the toys back and want to go chase them, so now she's getting up and barking incessantly cause she wants in on the action-has actually attempted playing tug with Jaeger, even though she gets mad 1/4 of the way into the tug and lets go to b**ch at him, too funny!
He has now gotten her to play with him more- she'll actually (kind of) chase him around the house which he loves.. (more like she barks and moves toward him) and he races around with the zoomies.....
I'm pretty happy (except for the loud barking, anyway) cause she's got that sparkle back in her eyes and acts younger! Here's to puppies!

Oh, these two do that, too. Outside, Rey is on a leash and she runs so fast in circles that I get dizzy. She was zooming around Buddy and she knocked him down, chewed too hard on him. This went on for weeks and I'd have to pull her away because she was playing too rough for him. So wasn't she in for a surprise when he did a play growl and and chased her! It's funny.

At 9, Buddy was still VERY active. In fact, he's just really slowed down in the past year. Even at 14, he's very active for his age. Lord help me if I haul wood up to the house without him tagging along! Whine, whine, whine at the door and I always end up feeling guilty and letting him out with me. It makes him feel special and useful to walk along the cart or something.

Rey gets on Buddy's nerves sometimes and he reprimands her with an irritated growl when she drops her Kong on his nap pillows. But Rey is such a spastic goofball that it just makes her roll around and try to make him forgive her, which irks him even more until he gives up, leaves the room and goes to his other pillow in my bedroom. LOL, I have to close to the door so he can get some peace at times.
