SOOOOO WEEEIIIIRRRRDDDD!!!
When i was a kid, about 10-12 years old, one of the guys my dad worked with lived down the street from us. He had a beautiful blue heeler named Casey. I used to go ask if Casey could come out to play. He didnt have kids of his own and was basically a dater type. He had a girl friend. Casey did NOT like the GFs daughter. Even before and after the GF and her kid, Casey would hop her fence and come down the street to visit me haha. Everyone knew Casey and loved her. She was safe so no worries. Anyway, Casey learned to jump up into my arms. She was about 50lbs. Tall girl, very lean, so not your typical stocky blue heeler. My parents and I were over there one night, parents just hanging out and talking. My grandma sent me down to ask about if they were going to eat dinner or not. Casey heard me come in, came racing from the back of the house and took a flying leap into my arms. The look on her owners face was priceless! He apologized profusely saying she'd never done ANYTHING like that before. My dad started cracking up so hard he couldnt breath and my mom reassured him it was perfectly fine. That was a thing between Casey and I. She NEVER did it with anyone else. Her owner tried to get her to do it with him and she was having none of it. It was our thing. I totally would have stolen Casey if I could have when we moved. Actually I wouldnt have needed to steal her. Her owner asked if I wanted her (of course i wanted her!) but the place we moved to didnt allow dogs over 20lbs (hate that rule!). I didnt see Casey again after that. I miss that dog. Well anyway, I'm sitting here on my couch and suddenly i hear this light tap tap tap from out front. Thinking its the stupid birds hitting my window upstairs again, i ignored it. Then i hear it again and Riley is throwing his usual hissy fit about it. I go and check the front door to find a couple of little girls about 10 or 11 outside. Okay, I dont know any of the neighborhood kids. Little strange. They're not selling anything so i'm even more puzzled why they're here. Did they accidently lose something over the back fence and need permission to get it? Nope. The taller of the two askes me if my dog can come out to play. At first I'm a little confused until she explains she doesnt want to hurt my dog, just spend some time with a dog since they had to rehome hers. They had a pit bull. (beautiful blue female) that they had to rehome because pits (or anything looking like one) are not allowed in base housing. Not knowing they when they first got on housing, it was a pretty nasty surprise. So because of stupidity of others, this girl had to lose her dog. Unfortunately, Riley is sick with his usual stomach issues (nothing new. Happens about once a week) and Shasta is looking a little sore from her zoomies this morning that came out of nowhere. She turned a corner too fast and because our downstairs is not carpeted, she slid around the corner and slammed into the dining table pretty hard (okay really hard. she moved it the 3 feet so it slammed into the wall and just about murdered my curio cabinet). She stopped zooming after that and has been limping and looking a little sick. You know the look they get. I told the girls maybe some other time but I still feel mean for having to say no. Shasta is snoring and twitching in her crate and Riley is in his crate glaring at anyone who walks anywhere near him like its their fault his stomach is mad at him. When did I go from the kid asking to play with the neighors dog to the person being asked if my dog(s) can come out to play? I will have to meet their parents and whatnot if i do allow it in the future and with Riley's unpredictable behavior, they'd only be allowed to play with Shasta.

Awe, that's cute!
We have a little boy next who will ask sometimes. Recently he yelled from his yard "can I come over & show your dog my new truck!". I did and my boy followed him around the yard as he played with his new Tonka truck...he even let him put his ball in the bed of the truck

It's cute....but a little risky. Could they come over to your yard while you supervised and play with the dogs?
When we lived in Bahrain, our lovely Indian neighbors children LOVED our dog. They would come to our door and ask to play with Paige. We always had to say no (and make up some excuse). If we walked her, they would follow us. They REALLY wanted to play soccer with her. Paige REALLY wanted to play "police dog" and chase them!

yeah i'm iffy on it. I mean I wouldnt have to worry about Shasta hauling off and biting someone but she is still learning and she's selective on who she views as someone she has to listen to. She doesnt listen to my husband if she can help it and he lives here!!! haha. I know if i ever do allow it, they'll be in my yard be it the backyard or out front. I dont know. With Riley, it'll never EVER happen because of the way he is. He's fine with kids but if he were to see a dog or someone got too close that he's not sure about, it would be a problem. So with him its an absolute no. It just threw me through a loop that someone is asking if my dogs can come out to play haha. So strange!!! I used to be that kid! Eh, maybe i'll ask them next time if they'd like to help me work on her recall. Everyone would be supervised, they'd get their doggie contact time and Shasta would still be getting some training.

I like to see my dog with kids as he loves loves loves them, but KIDS are unpredictable. Fairly recently a 6 year old wanted to play fetch with my GSD. Banjo is a great fetcher, loves to run and jump. However there are rules to the game. The biggest being that if you look like you are gonna throw the ball and don't, he gets a bit impatient to have the ball. I can control him, a 6 year old cannot.
So I laid down the rules. "You get the ball, you throw it, he brings it back. Rinse/repeat. Do not try a fakie, he will come after it kid...got it?" He said yes and all was well until the little deviant tried to hide the ball under his shirt. I can think of some dumb things to do around a GSD and hiding THE toy under your shirt is near the top of the list of idiotic things to do. It took Banjo about a millisecond to figure out where the ball was and he was on it, much to the child's dismay. What do little kids do when scared? Run. What do GSDs do with running things? Chase. Gasoline on the fire? Sure, here is some nitromethane too, make sure it's a real burner. Recall is a wonderful thing, Banjo only managed to scare the muffins out of this kid and no physical damage at all. I had to deal with the squealing parents as well. They were standing there when I set the rules and pointed out that their little monster was the one that broke the rules. I expressed my concern from the very beginning and tried to refocus the kid on a different game. In hindsight I should have put a foot down and just said no, but giving in to the kid was the easier route at the time. Kid still likes Banjo and all but won't engage him with toys anymore.

haha. poor kid shoulda listened a little better than he did! Riley will go after you for the ball so he doesnt get to play too much because he can be a bit scary about it. Shasta doesnt have too much interest in toys. Give her a kong stuffed with peanut butter and food we cant afford except in small bags (fabulous kong stuffers!) and she's all over it but just so she can empty it out. Riley will play fetch with anything. Shasta isnt interested.
The girls at the door today were really polite. Even asked me to give my sick doggie and hug and hoped both feel better. I think when I get Shasta back out on the long line working on recall, i'll see if the girls want to help but beyond that, i think thats as far as it will go.

I feel bad she had to give up her dog. Wonder if there is a way for her to get to interact w/ dogs through a base animal shelter. Anybody have therapy dogs kids on base can interact w/? Sorry Social worker here and miltary kids as I know you know serve too. The animal rule sucks Your idea of them helping sounds great. Ill be honest the dog who can hang out and play w/ kids is my dream dog.

not that i'm aware of. The base we're at is too small to even call for strays on base. We're supposed to call the sheriff who is supposed to connect us or give us the number to animal control for the area. Shasta is really good with kids. She's better with puppies but she likes kids. Riley loves kids because he learned they usually equal treats and entertainment and belly rubs haha. I guess we'll see how it goes. They'll probably be back tomorrow to ask again.

Echo thinks kids taste delicious....
....because they always have stuff on their face, hands, etc. ![]() Maybe you could teach them how to brush her, etc? Give them a little feeling of having their own dog again? |
