My understanding of LEO K-9s is they are trained to react if they feel there is a dangerous/aggressive person in their presence...such as someone sneaking up and trying to attack the handler from behind (for instance).
I was watching a LEO give a demo of his dog on TV recently and if anyone tried to reach over and touch/grab the officer the dog was trained to react at that moment without the officer giving a command. Given that, I agree with others, with the kind of training police K-9s have it does NOT make sense the officer would leave his dog attended by someone who is not trained to handle such a dog.

For those of you that didn't think it was funny sorry. But I laughed like crazy no the dog didn't get in trouble,he did the bark and hold so if that wasn't control I guess he is bad.No my wife is not the pack leader for that dog but as I said we know the dog very well and have even had the dog stay at our house a few times over the last 2 years sometimes more than a week at a time.Personally I think he did what he was supposed to do.

Yep it's a real riot. The only thing that would have made it funnier is if the kid had tripped as he was running from the store and knocked himself unconscience. Now that would be really a-w-e-s-o-m-e. Let's here it for the big bad GSD!!!!
![]() You all going to be laughing when it hits the papers and puts yet another nail in the ban the breed coffin for GSD's??

As for people mentioning K9s straining at the end of their leashes during a manhunt, at LEAST they were leashed and therefore the handler would still have been able to control them. Completely different IMHO |

If this really occurred and the individual was truly a police k9 officer,he does not need to be one. First of we do not take a patrol dog shopping and secondly,We do not hand our patrol dogs off to any civilian especially in a public place unless maybe one has a narc only trained retriever. This was irresponsible. I spent many years as a director of k9 in a very large agency and this would have terminated one of my guys career in K9 and got him into IAD.....
The agency employing him has a lot of liability with a dog and this could have caused them to pull out their checkbook

It is not funny and I am surprised people think it is. I wonder if people really stop and think. One of my sons is almost 4, when he gets something from the store he gets excited, he takes it to the counter and "slams" it on the counter, in his haste and being almost 4 he doesn't stop to think about what he is doing. He also is not hurting anyone. If this EVER happens to me you can bet I will be letting the officers bosses know about it. The dog should not have been left alone with someone who could not control it. He was irresponsible and created a possible dangerous situation for the people in the store. The dog shouldn't get into trouble, the officer should.

Had this been one of my handlers, he would have been suspended from duty and removed from the K9 Unit. It shows a lack of responsibility and professionalism. He subjected his department, supervisor and himself to liability if anyone would have been hurt. He endangered the general public set a very poor example of being a canine officer.
