Default Dogs and freak accidents.

When Brutus was a puppy we had a very rocky start because of his dominance aggression issue, because of this I had a very difficult time bonding with him. My husband did most of the training and was Brutus' primary caretaker during this time but then he took an over the road job and so that left me with the kids and Brutus.

As I began interacting with Brutus and spending a lot of time with him, I started falling in love with him-even though he was a little devil. We finally began to bond. During this time we hadn't fenced in our backyard yet so Brutus would poop in the front yard. On this particular day-Brutus was being very loving towards me and following me around so when he pooped instead of putting him in the house while I cleaned up the yard-I decided to tie him to the front stoop which has a rail along the side of it so that he could watch me.

As I cleaned up the yard-I kept glancing back at him and he looked adorable, he was so intently watching me. When I finished cleaning up the yard-I walked up to him to untie him and he got real excited and rose up quickly to greet me and that is when it happened….somehow his paw got stuck underneath the bottom of the rail. I tried to grab onto his paw and move it down to where the rail was higher up but he wouldn't let me near him. He was completely panicked and every time I approached he would bite at me. He was yipping and I was panicking as well because he wouldn't let me touch him and I had no idea what to do-it looked like he was going to tear his paw off he was yanking on it so hard. Well, he yanked it right out all right and it was cut bad! He couldn't walk on it and I thought it was broke.

An emergency trip to the vet followed-it was not broken just cut very deep. He healed nicely but has a scar on the top of his paw now. I blamed myself for tying him there-I never would have anticipated that something like that would happen. This thread is for sharing freak accidents-or just any accidental injury your dog has had-I hope that in sharing these stories we can learn about what things-things we may have never considered dangerous before could actual cause an injury to our dogs, and bring awareness to them.

Wiva caught her paw on the crate wiring as she was running in to have her breakfast. She freaked out squealing for a few seconds but was able to free herself by backing up and working her foot loose. It was the weirdest thing and completely caught me off guard. She limped on it for a few hours. Had she lost her head, it could have turned out worse...

When Puddi was a puppy, I used to watch tv and throw the ball around for her to chase. One night, I wasn't paying attention and threw the ball too close to the glass door. She ran at top speed after the ball and crashed into the door. She limped on the leg for a couple of days. I stopped throwing the ball near the door after that. Careless me!

This one isn't really a freak accident, but Wiva will frequently lock herself into closets and bathrooms. She opens the door, goes inside looking for stuff (no idea what, but she's on a mission) and then will somehow shut the door while rooting around in the closet. She can't open the door from the inside so she'll sit in there whining. Usually Whisk comes to get me to let her out lol

A similar thing happened the first night I had Virgil. He broke out of a wire kennel, so I put him in a 'kennel yard' thing that I had set up in the basement. He jumped up and got his paw stuck inbetween the gates(?). I didn't know the dog AT ALL; I had only been with him for a few hours, and most of that was in the car driving back home. He was panicking and yelling horribly, however, thankfully when I assisted him he didn't once bite at me! (though, 120lb gsd panicking is a very scary thing and I was somewhat unsure of what to do because he could have really hurt me!) I got him free and decided to just leash him to the bed for the night until I could get a stronger kennel for him the next day!

I have had freak paw accidents-I think they are not freak anymore. They seem to be out most common type of accident.

I switched crates in my truck after Grim got his paw stuck in it. Then Monday he caught his back paw stuck in the deck railing and flipped over on his side and my husband had to pick him up so I could free the foot which was bent over backwards.

He has also run into a tree and knocked out his front teeth. He also took a fish hook in the butt when he retrieved someones fishing bobber (that was the day I got serious about the emergency stop)

Cyra had another dog bite her tongue and it went through the main vein and let me tell you. THAT was a bloodbath--she was actually weak for several days. Almost needed a transfusion and my car looked like chain saw massacre after we got to the ER. She also wound up hanging upside down from a wire fence (paw once again) and also hung up on a barbed wire fence.

I have been lucky the dogs seem to know when we are helping them and let us get them out of their pickle.

I seem to vaguely remember one or both of my dogs having gotten their paws caught in something odd before, at least once, but I don't remember what. I remember he yelped, then just sat there doing nothing, waited patiently while I got it free for him.

WOW-that bite tongue! I probably would have passed out if I saw that much blood! Question-what did the vet do about your dog knocking out his teeth? Do they have doggy dentures or implants of did he have to just figure out how to eat with no teeth?

Well, it seems like everyone's dog except for mine allows them to assist him/her in an emergency. Lucky me with my nutty boy!
