A week ago I took our Ella on one of our usual hikes on an old logging trail loop. When we came to a rickety bridge that crosses a fast moving creek running through a deep crevice, she began to whine and sat down, refusing to budge.
This was very odd behavior for this girl. She is typically unflappable and not afraid of explosions, gunfire, heavy traffic or train engines passing within inches of her. After some coaxing, we traveled across the bridge; she very cautiously. We both made it home safely that day. Several days later we were going to take the same logging road loop trail. When we got to the bridge, it was gone. It had fallen into the crevice, with little evidence that there had ever been a bridge there at all. Belatedly, I realized what Ella had been trying to tell me. Aren't German Shepherds amazing? Incidently, Ella was adopted from a German Shepherd rescue six years ago this January. |
