Default Encounter with a Pit Bull

Before we went to Debbie Zappia training I went to North Bay to let the two girls pottie quickly. A jogger came by and had her pit bull with her. We saw her a while ago when we went there training.

Anyhow, her dog was off leash. Mine were off leash. The dog came over. The girls sniffed him, were friendly. His hackles went up and he went after Nala. The Jogger didn't even use her voice to call him back, mine stayed with me the entire time. It's like she invited him to tea. She never even really called him back like you'd expect her to. It's like she was afraid to use her voice and only said in a low voice "Come", "Come", "Come"

The dog didn't listen. Instead I used my voice to the fullest extend, like I usually do whith lose dogs. I kind of like inherited that from my family. I screamed at the dog "NO! GO AWAY!!!" so loud and made a threatening step towards him that he tucked his tail and ran off. And all the jogger said to her dog was "What were you thinking?" ... no apology, nothing. She never even came towards us to pick up her dog.

My teammate was on the phone during the entire encounter. Thankfully she didn't go depth from my yelling.

i'm glad everything worked out with your encounter.
we were in the woods today and we encountered a Pit
off leash. my dog was off leash also. the Pit moved towards
but the owner said "no, sit" and the Pit acted like he was a GSD
he stopped instantly and sat. i said "no, this way" to Loki
and he turned and ran ahead me and my GF. the owner
of the Pit and i looked at each other and we gave each
other the nod ( the nice dog, nice training nod).

I don't think Nala would have stood a chance. Once they locked their grip, they locked and the owner didn't look like she was going to do something about it. Gladly, my yell scared him off.

Glad your yell was enough to scare him away! I hate irresponsible owners, even more so owners of such a breed.

I'm confused... are you implying here that Pit Bulls cannot be trained as well as a GSD?

Gotta bring this up, too... Are you trying to say that the Pit Bull locked it's jaws on your dog? Because hopefully you know that this is a complete myth and that pit bulls do not lock jaws... "/

Oh Jeez... no... I scared him off before he was able to get a good bite. She's not hurt in any kind of way. However, we all know how powerful their grip is. She would have never stood a chance against a pit bull.

That is not what he said... sounds like you are reading a little too much into it.

Oh yes, absolutely true they are strong, I just didn't want the wrong message being sent there... VERY glad Nala didn't get hurt at all.

I probably am. Just very passionate about the pit bull stuff. Gets me into trouble more times than not, that's for sure.

no, i wasn't implying that Pits can't be trained as well
as GSD's. i was complementing how well trained the Pit was (you know how well trained GSD's can be). i also don't hate Pit owners.

Don't feel bad, I sorta raised my eyebrow at that one too.

I think that the GSD grip is as strong if not stronger than a pits, but the terrier in the pit makes them go go go like the energizer bunny. Glad that your dog was not hurt. Too bad the owner doesn't have a clue how to manage her dog.
