The "leave it" command really is a must to teach our dogs.
My 3 year old and I were sitting on our front verandah yesterday watching our 10month old GSD and 2yr kelpie having a blast playing chasies......we laugh and laugh at them as they hoon around. Then all of a sudden they both ran over to something on the lawn which I couldn't see from where I was but they both looked far too interested for my liking then I saw the head come up as they got closer and sure enough it was an eastern brown snake (second most deadly land snake in the world ) I just yelled "leave it" in my biggest most angry voice and they both immediately came away and sat by the lawn. If they didn't know that command they would have been bitten before I could get to them not to mention how dangerous it is to try and pull two dogs off a snake.Anyway all is well....we all live to tell the tale (except the snake)....posted a picture of the monster......he was about 51/2 foot......I had cut his head off after I shot him with the shot gun as they can still bite so he looks a bit worse for wear...... ![]()

Glad your dogs were okay- but why did the snake have to die? Couldn't you of got a wildlife ranger to come and get it (it's illegal to kill them)?

Glad you were watching and prepared, and that your dogs were well trained..as to this..but why did the snake have to die? Couldn't you of got a wildlife ranger to come and get it (it's illegal to kill them)..

I'm a snake lover, but I feel that you killing the snake was the best way to protect your family and your dogs. Killing it is a better idea than trying to catch it, which could have ended up with you getting bitten. If it was a garden snake or something, I would have let it on its merry way. But considering this was a highly dangerous, venomous reptile, killing it was the safest way to protect your family.
Anywhoozle, I'm glad everyone is okay!
