Default What a Crazy Night

Last night around 7pm I hear Cathy telling me that there is someone out front of our house just siting there ( I live on a gravel road with very little traffic ). I go from the office to the living-room where all of a sudden I see that it is an officer that is shining his spot light into the yard as if he was looking for something so I proceed out the front door into the yard thinking that someone had called and complained about the noise from my dogs since we had just finished feeding them. I ask the officer if I could help him and he replied that there was a dangerous person with a gun running from them and to keep our lights on so if he is seen to call the department. I then went back in thinking that I feel sorry for anyone that would walk up onto our property with the type of dogs I have here.

About an hour goes by and while letting our dogs out from the house, Penni & Cira start barking madly toward our barns. Cathy comes into the office where I'm at the computer to tell me that there is somebody out there cause of how Cira and Penni are cutting up. I then call the County Sheriff's office to find out whether they had found this person and am told that they are still actively looking for him still. I then proceed to tell the dispatcher that my dogs are going nuts and are looking toward the barns in the back of my property. The next thing I have 9 squad cars in front of our place in which I meet the first officer as he pulls into my driveway. I then point to the direction in which the dogs were barking and told them that the barns were open and they were welcome to look thru them just in case this man was hiding in them.

Out comes the K-9 from the local police departments car and they all go back toward the buildings while I stand out in the front part of the driveway near the squad car. Mean while there is a plane flying above circling the area. After about 45 minutes later they come back empty handed telling me thanks for letting them know and they did get a hit in one of my open barns, but didn't discover anyone in there. They slowly leave and I feel like I had just wasted their time. About 30 minutes later I hear Cathy yelling that there is a squad pulling back into the drive which at this time I meet him as I come out our back door and at this time I see 2 more driving rather fast thru the empty part of my property heading back toward the barns. The officer tells me to please go back into my house. This is like telling a kid that he has to go inside and can't watch...lol. I stand outside my back door and all of a sudden I hear a dog that sounds like he is fighting with another and then I hear the screams from someone out there as if he is getting eaten alive by the dog which also is sounding like he is attacking him. Then all of a sudden it gets rather quite and I can't hear this dog anymore, but at this time I can hear the guy screaming to get the dog off of him. I then see the dog being lead back to the K-9 unit with the officer saying to his partner
" GOOD BOY" and seeing this big smile in the dogs face as if he had just got a treat. Then I see this guy being dragged to the other squad car in his bloody cloths still screaming in pain. I then went out to speak to one of the officers and he begins to tell me that this guy seen the dog coming at him and he dropped the gun and ran for higher ground on top of one of the combine heads being stored in my open barn thinking he was going to get away from the dog, but found that the dog just followed him right to the top of the head and attacked him there.

He then told me that the plane saw him a few hundred feet in back of my property heading back my way thinking that he would be safe in one of my barns maybe til morning. He thought that their first visit had scared him behind my place into the open farm fields where he laid watching all that was going on. He again thanked me for the first call which brought them in the right direction to have tracked him down. He kind of laughed saying that he could believe that he was heading back my way with the type of dogs that were here that originally sensed he was out back. All I could say to him was well you just can't fix stupid...lol

Wow what a crazy night here at Shepherds By Design K-9. A night that I will remember the rest of my life!!!

So glad that he was caught, great training exercise for the dog with a great reward at the end. Also glad that he did not use the gun to harm your babies or the police k-9. Nice story, thanks for sharing with us.

Yes it was quite an experience. My first thought when the dogs were carring on was to go get Narys or Ghost and bring one of them out with me, but then reality sunk in when I thought of him having a gun. Then I thought it wouldn't be worth loosing one of them or myself to an idiot with a gun

You simply cannot hide from dogs, it's just not possible. Maybe on first pass the dog might miss someone, but when they fire up that nose it's game over man. Every cop show makes me giggle, the perp is all about running and ditching the cops UNTIL the K-9 shows up and then it's "CALL OFF THE DOG! CALL OFF THE DOG!"

I was once "investigated" by a K-9 GSD. I was working near a warehouse (surveying property) and the alarm went off in the warehouse. I didn't think twice about it and continued to do my thing. About 5 mins later I see a huge GSD poke his head over the bank and spot me. My brain did the math, Alarm+GSD=Police Dog. Oh crud. I stopped moving and stood there nervously, the K-9 beelined it my way. I tried to look as small as possible and do nothing that looked preyish or aggressive. It worked, as the dog rolled up and watched me. I could tell one wrong move and I was gonna get it, so I stood there praying for a handler to show up. The handler did indeed show up, in probably like 5 seconds, but it felt like a lifetime. The handler quickly saw that I was working (metal detector, machete and other assorted surveyor implements on my person and called the dog away. He then walked to me and asked if I had seen anything. The dog meanwhile was boring holes in my forehead with a stare, looking like a chocked arrow ready to fly. Intimidating in the extreme, I consciously kept my motions fluid and slow, oh how I wanted to sit down.

About an hour later the cop showed up again and let us know that all was fine, dog was with him again and a totally different animal. Almost goofy, work done and wanting to investigate/play it seemed. I got to check out his bullet-resistant vest (local girl did a fund raiser to get all the K-9s vests) and toss a ball for him a few times. The pride the cop had for his dog was written all over him, and the dog was equally smitten with his handler.
