I am tired of people saying Rocky is not a real german shepherd because he is not aggressive to strangers(to him) that are my friends I allow into my house.
One of my boyfriend's old friends he hadn't seen since high school came over to visit and once he got drunk, he called rocky a p****, b****, and said that he was a waste of a dog. Then he pretended to grab my throat and he was like "see, the dog is so dumb it won't protect you" I elbowed him in the gut (I don't care if I had only met him a handful of times, I don't let anyone touch me like that), grabbed Rocky, then shot my boyfriend a "take care of this" look and went to my room. The friend was kicked out [points for boyfriend], but I am still upset because this is an accumulation of comments like this from different people. I don't need to prove anything to anyone. My dog would not protect my house, only himself, if someone broke in and I wasn't home. However, I am 100% confident that if someone attacked me, he would scare them off or bite them. Because it has happened twice. Once at the river where drunk men were approaching me, telling me they were going to show me a good time and when I yelled for help, Rocky went to the end of his leash lunging and barking and snarling at them and scared them off. The second time, I opened my door in the middle of the night to find a person in black standing there with their hand raised and I screamed bloody murder and Rocky sailed off the bed and knocked the person over and had his teeth around their leg then suddenly let go because he realized it was my roommate. She had very very very light bruises from a few of his teeth (hardly the size of 1/4 of a penny) but she and I think that if she had been an intruder he would have continued his bite instead of letting go. She agreed to turn the light on in the hall before knocking on my door next time instead of standing in the pitch black in all black clothes at 2am lol (He has never, ever acted the slightest bit aggressive towards her, she is Mommy #2/Owner#2, so we weren't worrried about the incident) Anyways, I love my dog. I LOVE that he doesn't run up to people wagging his tail or run up barking. I LOVE that he wants nothing to do with anyone but me my boyfriend my roommate and our families and will ignore strangers. I don't care that he walks behind me to avoid being pet by strangers when they reach out to him at petsmart. WHY do people expect my dog to bite people? HELLO that would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. WHY can't my dog be shy? YES, he is from a BYB and is shy. NO, that isn't the correct breed standard. I don't care. I LOVE him!!!! Does anyone else have a shy dog that has people say mean things about him? Isn't it better that he is JUST shy, and not fear aggressive???? |

Yup. Everything you described, I've been dealing with for 9 1/2 years.

Because some people's elevators don't go all the way to the top.
Look at all the occupy people in the news for example. Your dog has actual common sense and doesn't just randomly bite because people are obnoxious.

Stupid people will always underestimate your dog......it's just one of the many things that contribute to the "stupid bucket" that they carry around within themselves.
*If an animal has teeth...it can bite.*

How many Lab or Golden owners are there out there that have dogs who would piss themselves around shotgun fire, and would actually retrieve a bird? Very few working Labs & Goldens.
My first GSD was similar to yours...and the quote above is really all that matters.

It's funny that this thread popped up today. I talked to my brother last night on the phone, haven't talked to him in months. His friend is the one that owned the original Knuckles 30+ years ago that started my love for GSD's (my Knuckles, obviously, is named after him, but he was a vicious dog.... except to me). When I told my brother I finally got my Knuckles he said "oh no, what kind?". I said "A German Shepherd, what else would a Knuckles be?". He said, "a full blown one?". (his words for purebred, I guess) And then it started... he's going to attack people, my girls, they are unpredictable, blah blah blah. I just laughed at him and said "Knuckles was tied up to a tree in a backyard... my Knuckles lives in the house with us and will be trained, there's a big difference.". I would have thought that if ANYONE would understand that, he would. Considering this is a guy who owned the most mellow Chow you would ever meet in your life. Some people see a certain breed and expect every stereotype there is. Don't worry about it, love your dog for who he is, not what everyone expects him to be.
