Default Rocky got the poop scared out of him...Literally. In Public :O

We went to the vet this morning to get Rocky's bordatella (sp?) shot and no matter how many times we go in there "just to visit" for fun, with treats, he still gets really nervous.

My vet allows me to just "get the shot and go", so long as we have had an exam in the past 8 months. I would rather spend the 30$ exam visit fee on toys for Rocky lol. Or groceries sometimes!

Normally they take him in the back but today they had a new vet assistant and she was scared of Rocky and she said "you can just hold him in the waiting room and I will give it to him". I told her he would just stand there without being held, but she told me she would prefer me to hold him. Oh well. So I held him gently, but as she went behind him he got really nervous.

The second the needle went in, diarrhea came out.

I have never been so embarrassed! Rocky has NEVER pooped inside any public place! Luckily, all 10 of the people who watched this happened said something along the lines of "poor sweet puppy! He was so nervous"

He is a year and 3 months. Should I be concerned about this, health wise? Or do dogs actually "get the poop scared out of them"?

Next time should I just shell out the extra 30$ to go into an exam room? Could the other dogs have caused this extra nervousness?

And I won't even describe to you what my passenger seat in the car looked like after his continued accident on the way home..... :O

I offered to clean it up if she would just hold Rocky's leash for me, but she chose to clean up diarrhea instead of holding a german shepherds leash.

I would have asked for someone else to give the shot. That vet tech's nerves can add to the problem.

Also, next time I would withhold food before going.

As long as you are going to stay at that practice I would make sure when you make your appointment, that you request another vet tech handle your dog.
I've been working with my vet & her staff with Lakota, she'll be 2 in January. She won't take any treats. But now I tell her were going to visit the kitties. As soon as we pull into the parking lot she knows were we are, she doesn't want to get out of the truck. They have 2 cats, one is dog friendly, Ike. So its helping. I would imagine his nerves are what caused the accident. I would think the exam room is better. Maybe you can go for a few social visits into the room.

I definitely won't go with this vet tech again. She IS new, so I have no hard feelings towards her whatsoever. Perhaps she got bit in the past? But from now on, shots will be with the woman that Rocky "likes" (by liking, I mean if she pets him the end of his tail twitches ever so slightly. ALMOST a wag haha)

Since this hasn't happened before, I am blaming the "new variables"...that he didn't know the woman and that he was in the waiting room. Since he was 6 months, every shot has been given by the same tech and she never approaches him from behind.

((He hasn't eaten since yesterday morning, since I always was scared this would happen since I know how nervous he gets))

Right now he is sleeping on his bed I made him, happy as can be

The vet Woolf goes to makes all kinds of arrangements for him and other dogs who come in, that like Woolf are fear aggressive all the way to like yours, simply scared out of their wits.

Several of the techs are scared of Woolf, and of course, Woolf being Woolf feeds into that. They have it noted on his chart for one specific tech there that is to work with him. She works magic with him.

If there are things they can do to alleviate the stress your dog is under, insist on it. Definitely insist on a different tech. If no cooperation, speak with the vet or start shopping for a new vet.

Riley used to be that way at the vets but he's spent so much time at various clinics the last 4 years, i think he's just gotten used to it though he is still nervous.

I remember when we took him in so they could shave him down and clean up the mess he'd made of himself from flea allergies, the vet came into the room really quickly and the tech seemed to appear out of nowhere behind Riley. The tech got full on sprayed right in the face because she knelt down behind him with NO warning and just started shaving. Her mouth was open and everything. Riley hadnt eaten anything since his meal the night before too so i kinda wonder if he was saving up?

I have no advice except that I agree with not allowing that tech near him again. Between his nerves and her nerves and probably some of yours too, i think it was all pretty overwhelming.

oh yeah! the smell alone was horrendous. i'm amazed she didnt vomit right there. My husband and I were trying so hard not to laugh and the vet just busted up. I felt so bad for her but at the same time i was thinking how she kind of deserved it for surprising him the way she did. Especially since he's been known to get a bit snappy at the vets office. I mean he's snappy at home but the vets office is the only place he gets that way with people. I do wonder if he realized being snappy wasnt getting him outta there any faster so he developed a new method of escape lol. I dont think i ever saw that Tech there again after that haha.
