This morning, after turning the dogs out, I walked out to the barn. I noticed that Hondo (in the back yard) was focused on my nieghbor's shop. Every once in a while he'd give a soft "Woof!". It was dark, and I couldn't see over there so I just assumed it was a cat.
I went back into the house, showered and went to bring Hondo back in for breakfast. Normally he is waiting at the door to be let back in. He was still sitting by the fence, totally focused on the shop. He turned and looked at me and gave a quiet "Woof!". He knows in the mornings we have a strict rule of complete quiet. I called him to me, brought him in and fed him breakfast. While he was eating I started to think that maybe something has happened to the old lady who lives next door. I put Hondo in his kennel, grabbed a flashlight and went to investigate. I had to walk across my pasture, and then across her pasture. The closer I got to her shop I could hear some sort of hissing sound. Before I got right up to her shop I realized what the sound was. A broken water pipe. I walked back to my house thinking how in the world was I going to explain to my neighbor how I knew her water pipe was broken. I certainly couldn't hear it from my house, and I don't know if she'd believe that Hondo detected something was wrong and alerted me. Because she is elder and can get eaisly confused, I decided to call my other neighbor (who is retired and could help her out). I called him on the phone and explained to him what happened. He laughed and said I should license Hondo was a leak detector for plumbers.

Dogs always know when something is different. He knew the sound was unfamiliar and told you it was there. Good job Hondo.

I think it's great that Hondo alerted on the neighbor's leak. But I've been asking Hondo to sniff out some old pirate booty...some buried treasure...and still nothing.
