Ok, I took Heidi to the vet today for a target test. She is in heat and I put a diaper on her outside the door so that she would not bleed all over the reception room where we would be until the results came in.
There was a lady in there with her kid who was about four give or take some. Heidi ignored the old keeshond, and we sat down and we were there for about half an hour before they took Heidi's blood. Time enough to hear about the lady's black lab that they didn't want to chain or buy a kennel for, she was their only female dog and she was a roamer. After getting hit by a car and getting her leg amputated, she was picked up by the dog catcher 4 times (each time costing the lady $40). Finally the pound told them they found someone who would love to adopt her and she agreed (because she just wouldn't stay at home.) Of course they went right out and got a boxer. The boxer turned out to have a telescoping intestine, and had to be put down. So her brother had his brother and a litter out of him, and they got two more boxer pups. The three month old pup has two absesses and a 105 degree fever and they took out at least 1/2 GALLON of pus from the absess. Anyhow that is why they were there. As soon as I sat down, the kid asked me why my dog was looking at him. I said, pointedly, that I do not have any kids, and she didn't know people come in your size. (I said this so that MOM would know that she was not well socialized around kids.) The kid was going back and forth and back and forth and up on the seat, and down, and going toward my dog waving his arms or eating some of the treats the vet leaves out. While we were there, he had two packages of peanut butter cooking and a package of chips. Heidi is watching him transfixed. He is holding the peanut butter cooking and I am sitting their like a hawk, and the mother is chatting away oblivious. Oh, a couple of times she told the boy to sit down, or to back up. But it really did not matter, the cloth of his pants barely made contact with the bench before he was up and bouncing and waving in front of my dog again. Heidi was good, and was not there because she was sick. But what if she was? What if she was in pain. This lady was NOT going to keep her kid in check around her if she had her leg broken and wide open. It was almost like she was HOPING for a lawsuit. At one point the kid ran past inches from Heidi's nose. Shortly after, while I was on the other side a fellow came in and Heidi saw him and wanted to go up to him. He thought she was very nice and asked me if she bites. I said, "she has teeth." He said Oh, and moved his hands back. I let Heidi advance on him. and she sniffed him while he was telling me that he had a male three times her size. (that would be big, but I 'spect he was exaggeratin' a bit). I did tell him that she hasn't bitten anyone yet and he did pet her. But after the lady with the obnoxious kid, I just did not know if I wanted ANYONE messing with her. Heidi is a nice and social girl. She will come up and sniff, and allow a pet, but she does not go out of her way for pets from strangers. After she has sniffed to ensure you do not have ulterior motives, she will move on and sniff someone else or come back to me. As for the two boxer puppies, they are both males. The vet said not to separate them and that she shouldn't have any trouble with raising two the same age. She has a kennel now. She is not sure yet whether she wants to get them fixed (yeah, I asked). I also told her that two boys might be ok together, but it will be a whole other story if there is a female in the mix. She said if anything happens to these two, she is done with dogs.

I tend to move away from people mostly kids who I can tell are too much for Zoe. I almost died the other day when a boy ran up behind us and threw his arms around Zoe's back- she looked back, looked at me, and then looked away. I politely told the boy dogs don't usually like hugs from strangers. The truth is your average 4 year old boy is only 4
They can't sit still, are usually too rough, and even when they have been raised CORRECTLY around animals which this kid has not been don't understand wild movement can spark a lunge from a dog. Heidi sounds like she was a perfect angel though which is good. The lady sounds like a complete mooron- yes mooron, not moron

They have a policy that dogs coming in stay on the one side, and dogs going out, there are no chairs over there, because people pay their bill and leave, and my dog might be fine over there, but the other dogs leaving might have trouble while their owners are paying up. So we stay in the waiting section, and leave that little area on the other side for outgoing patients. I was not really worried about my dog. She has a CGC, and plenty of training, and listens good, has been to dog shows, and she HAS seen children. I do not live with kids though and try to ensure that kids to not do stupid things with her, like hug her, step on her, kick her, tease her, etc. A couple of times I gave her a leave it, or did an EH! toward the child when he came very close, and would get the resultant, "come sit down" by the lady. I could have waited outside. I would not have been safe though. When I moved to settle up, she took the kid outside so she could smoke, he was right there on the porch when I walked out with the dog, and she was half a mile away smoking and talking on her cell phone.

Good grief, it behooves me why people can not tend to their kids. We do not have kids but Max has seen a few when we go into Petsmart and he seems ok. But I had a girl one time on a dog walk with Ri0 run up and hug him. Scared the crap out of me, even tho he loved everyone you just can never be sure how they will react to something like that.

Someone has to start up an obedience school for kids and parents. Teaching the sit-stay has to be top priority.
