Our best friends live in a town about an hour from us, and every long weekend, we load up the kids and Shadow and head up to their house for a relaxing weekend.
Their mixed breed dog, Timber, is approx 11 yrs old and she and Shadow have known each other since Shadow was 16 weeks old. They normally get along great. We arrived at our friends' home, and we told that Timber had a bladder infection so was feeling a bit under the weather. As soon as we entered the house, Shadow ran to play with Timber, but she just wasn't in the mood. Normally, we can call Shadow off when he starts to annoy Timber, but on Saturday it just wasn't happening. He wouldn't leave her alone. Suddenly, Timber snapped at Shadow, which was also unusual as she normally has never ending patience with him. Our friend's DD came out to see what was going on and noticed a discharge coming from Timber. A quick call to the vet, and my friend was told to get her in to the office immediately. Timber was never spayed, and the vet thought that she had developed an infection in her uterus and that it was blocked. The phone call to the vet was made 5 minutes before the office closed. Timber was rushed to the vet and an emergency spay was performed. On Sunday when she came home, Shadow was so good with her. None of the normal pouncing and jumping. He just wanted to be near her. The vet said that if the surgery hadn't been done when it was, Timber would not have made it. If Shadow had listened and left Timber alone, none of us would have noticied the discharge and just put her bad mood down to the bladder infection, and left her alone. Shadow caused us to notice what was going on with Timber, and to get her to the vet with only 5 minutes to spare. That is what I call puppy love.
