My Kaiser... he's from Dessin Animal Shelter in Honesdale, PA
It was love at first sight and I was really impressed with his focus (he's looking at a ball I had) during his evaluation. He was turned in by his breeder when the breeder was threatened with a neglect case. He was with a 10+yr old female that he was very bonded to. As you can see, he was underweight. I was just supposed to be his foster but adopted him.
A few weeks later after some TLC in foster care.
He is now taking agility classes, will be starting nose work next month, goes off leash hiking almost every Sun and is being a fantastic foster brother.
My current group... Kaiser, Raven is from a BYB, and our current foster Katie who Kaiser is incredibly patient with (he is her favorite toy!)
Clover is in the center. She came to us through Chicagoland Shepherd Rescue 3 plus years ago. Her origins were on an Iowa farm where she was tied outside and I think they were trying to make a mean dog out of her, which if you know her, you know is not possible.
Max is on the left. We found him via this forum in a shelter where he had been picked up as a stray. The only evidence someone owned him was a dirty collar. He was underweight, dirty and a total sad sack. He has been a challenge with medical issues, but he has such a wonderful personality, we can forgive him that. Only real issue we wish we could change would be his dog aggressiveness.
Patton is on the right. He came also via this forum. He was abandoned at a boarding facility in Atlanta. He is a big boy and a strong willed boy. Based on our history with him, I am figuring either his owner could not handle him (very strong), or he bit too many of her boyfriends. We have to manage his contact with people carefully, but once he meets someone as is assured they are not a threat, he is quite wonderful.
I remind Clover often these two guys are her fault for being so wonderful. I have to say our experience with the breed has been very positive and I imagine we will always have GSD's as long as we have dogs.
First was my Kaita. A coworker just had a baby and said the baby was "allergic", and had to get rid of Kaita, who was around 6 years old. My boyfriend (now husband) and I said we'd hold on to her for a few days while she spoke with a couple of people who were interested. She was in the house all of an hour when I knew I had to have her. She passed away in 2006 at nearly 14 years old. She was my heart dog.
Then came Braskie. I was browsing Petfinder, and spotted this adorable 6 month old puppy who was listed as being in my hometown and was in danger of being PTS. I didn't understand the idea of transporting dogs from down south, and applied to adopt him immediately. I called my husband and told him what I did after the fact. Heehee. The rescue called me back immediately and asked if I was serious because he was going to be put down the next day or so! I was, and he came home in a snowstorm.
Then there was Roxy. By this time, a few months after B came along, I was volunteering with the rescue, and she told me that she had a GSD mix coming up. I fell in love, and showed the husband her picture a few times before he said we need to adopt her. Sucker!
Here's her petfinder picture; she looks like a coyote!
And now, she's not much bigger. I swear she's a GSD/Chihuahua mix. She's so funny looking! And mean. But sweet. She's a daddy's girl though.
Thanks, Jamie - I know - I always post my muttsters! She's the best model too. Thank you - yes, I was so focused on posting the pic, I forgot her little story. She was named Brandy, had been purchased the day after the family's dog had been hit by a car, and everything you could do wrong with a puppy, they did. By six months old they were terrified of her, and she of them, and they kept her crated all the time because of their fear. It took the rescue she was with over an hour to get her from the crate to the car and then again to the foster home. The foster had her 2 months.
I had "adopted" a dog for 2 days who wanted to find and kill my cat - not a match and returned before a RIP for my kitty! I saw Brandy and said how is she with cats, they said great with cats, not so great with people. I said that I can deal with! My 9 year old dog at the time was fear aggressive in remission and I felt comfy with the problem. She took a LOOOOONG time to bond with me (but she loved Kramer my 9 year old) and then when she did, that was it. She is THE best girl, so well behaved, sweet and wonderful. You would never know she was who she was.
I changed her name right away to Bella. I am fostering her sister now and I changed her name from Mandy to Mila. You can see her here: Big Dogs, Big Heartworm: June 2011
PaddyD - that dog is beautiful. WOW. Do you want me to post the pic?
