Default Prey without Hunt...

Since a lot of people wonder what it looks like when a dog has prey but no hunt drive. I have the perfect example.

My foster has a lot of food drive, quite some prey but he doesn't hunt for it. I've tested him for almost half an hour. Once you are actively engaged with him, he goes for it but as soon as you throw the ball and you keep him back he looses interest or gets distracted by something else. However, I do believe he would be great for obedience competition or even Schutzhund or French Ring.

If you wanted to know what it looks like. This is it... he found it but he just wasn't interested because it's not moving. I threw the ball into the flowers, walked in a circle and let him go. First I thought he would go for it that is when I said "Good boy" for the first time but naaaah... it did not work very well. And that is like it went the entire time. As long as you keep it moving he's all about it.

However, I tested him on the food drive and we waited a minute before we let him go, broke the focus completely and he hunts for the food. I'd say he's got an exceptional food drive.

And I am actually thinking about giving it a shot, I've got over a month and you can do quite a bit of training in a month, so let's see how far we can get him.

We call it retrieve/hunt drive. The dog's desire to retrieve must be insatiable. THIS is what the dog is hunting. The retrieving dummy, kong whatever is what we imprint the dog on. The dog will search nonstop for the target odor because he thinks it is his dummy etc. We try to maintain the illusion. If the dog has no retrieve drive, he has no desire to hunt for it. This is why labs retrieve ducks, upland bird dogs retrieve those fowl etc.
