Default Today reminded me of why you need the right dog for SAR

Had a cadaver call this morning. No results - turned into an "all y'all come" by the community but we came on invite by the SO and got put in some high probability areas. But during the course of the morning

We jumped a bunny rabbit and a fawn (and you know you almost trip over them before they bolt)

Went through IC with helicopter landing, scores of people, more ATVs then I have ever seen in one spot and noise and chaos.

Neighborhood with chained and barking dogs behind fences where we had to check around outbuidlings and deserted homes......folks were amazed he could work offlead in all of that.

Never got rattled by any of this (well he did start to chase the fawn but a quick recall took care of that) and was completely oblivious to the helicopter at least 20 barking dogs and the crowds. And of course the people running up to him wanting to pet him (about which he could not give a flip)

Came home - we were both overheated and exhaused but I set out a problem later at home and he was just as happy as can be to work it with gusto and found it in no time.

It is just so nice to have a good dog.

<snort> and people want to sell washouts for SAR prospects! Genetics and nerves ...make a good dog in all venues....once you have one like this, you raise the bar and can't go backwards.

Kudos to Grim....!

exactly Wolfstraum , people do want to sell washouts for SAR , which is ridiculous .
we had a training situation where in one of our "regional woods" , where later in the afternoon there was a charity ride for disabled kids. Horses and riders were crisscrossing on our search field , the "victims" were on the move walking in circles, the heat and humidity were starting to become intolerable - yet on went the dogs , which in the end one team was able to locate our "missing persons" (never met them before !) .

Thanks -the scenario above was a reminder and a combination of things seen frequently. For live find searches "all of the above" are not that common. We don't usually get the crowds and helicopters for cadaver searches.

I am very happy with my dog but they all have to face these things and more. Disaster dogs face much more.
