Default Search in NC

Could not get off work today so just being tech support on the phone for mapping and GPS issues but if you do pray, please do for this girl and her family.

Gandalf is one of several search dogs that will be used; the news just likes to have one to fix on, I guess.

We normally dont wind up that far in NC but were called in by the authorities last night.

Nancy, you said you all get a lot of those around there. Are these folks that are clueless or is the terrain treacherous or what? I ask because I have been hiking all over the country since I was a kid. I just wonder what the heck folks think when they take off in the woods.....

I got a call yesterday too. Set up teams for the weekend on something. Geez. never ends..

Yes, even the well marked trails can be misleading, and people dont realize that cell phones don't do to well in the mountains and that a warm day can be followed by a very very cold night. It is a dangerous area.

Have not heard back anything yet.....Normally we also search at night but not in this terrain. I hope she if found alive. This is our teams first day on.

Most calls never make the news, though (which I imagine is the same for you)

Wish I could say there was any news ... not much

Here is a slide show. The folks in the red and black jackets are my team as is the silver trailer with the yellow/red/black/ logo. Mainly you get pictures at incident command because press is usually not allowed to go out with the searchers.

Hiker Found ALive

Missing hiker found alive but hurt in Buncombe | The Asheville Citizen-Times | citizen-times.com

Not by a dog but she fell and was on a rock ledge and a helicopter found her.

Congrats to the spotters

Thats what I mean. Its not about the dogs. The dogs are one of many many tools!

This is wonderful!

It is.

We have heavy canopy is most of our search areas and a lot of wildlife that limits FLIR. Not to metion (in more rural areas) all the "helpful" community members who self deploy into the woods.

I am still angry about a search where a FLIR helicopter turned around and went back because there were too many people out in the woods. In that particular case it would not have made a difference in the outcome, but people need to do what they are told. Grrrrrrr.
