Depends on the team........................unless you are talking certification then it depends on the test.
On our team we really don't care about the dog until we find out if the person is suitable........suitability inlcudes someone who is willing to get another dog if their dog does not work out or work on the team in some other fashion, can do the job, has the time and money to commit to SAR , and has the right temperament. On the dog, we do testing along the lines of Brownwell Marsolais --- maybe not as formal but same kind of evaluation.

Thanks. They said for me to bring him out and see what his strong points are that they would do an evaluation. He's 4 months old so I'm not sure how that could be done or what could be derived from that. Anyway, its an opportunity to meet the folks and see how they train and get more socialization for Tanis.

Jen, I can tell so much about a puppy at 4 months. I also train dogs for service work for the disabled. And I frequetly test puppies for suitability for that. I also did SAR for 10 years with 2 operational dogs.
You can see the dog's relationship with the owner, if he has prey drive, retrieve drive, and hunt drive right from the git go. Its also pretty easy to see if the dog is confident in new situations and if he/she is reactive to other dogs at that age. All give me clues about whether this pup would be appropriate or not. I started my FH tracking dog tracking at 9 WEEKS old. (He should have his VST and FH2, but I haven't been able to get him to a trial - I am pretty isolated) 4 months is perfect to start imprinting scent work if the dog has a desire and is highly motivated by play, retrieve, or food. Good luck! I hope you get involved and are the type of person who gives your heart and soul to SAR! That's what it takes!
