Question for HRD dog handlers.

Would a HRD dog be able to find remains in a land fill(dump)?

(Don't worry, I'm not planning on dumping any bodies.

)

I was just watching a show on TV and it made me wonder about this.

Well, I will not search landfills. Regardless of the fact that in the US,medical waste is not allowed there, it is amazing what is in them........ That being said. The dogs have to be proofed like heck on animal remains,old meat, etc etc. the methane is a problem if they have not been proofed off of that. An awful lot of variables that I am unwilling to deal with. the whole bloody place is a bio hazard.

I know some handlers who will search land fills. I however will not. Success rate is so poor it is not worth the risk for my dog. Its like searching for a needle hidden in a haystack filled with glass and toxic waste.

From all I have heard, I would not either. Risk is high for dog AND handler and as said, odds of success are poor.

It is one thing to take a significant risk to save a life, another thing to do that to find a body.

I totally get where you are coming from as far as even if the dog COULD do it, you wouldn't let him/her.

We got invited to search after Katrina and declined ...... we felt we were way out of our league [but many who were went anyway]

I know a few dogs that went that developed cancers and died shortly afterwards.

Myself and some others searched storm debris for two days after Hurricane Ike down close to Galveston bay,Bolivar etc. I left with a raging sinus infection. Stuff everywhere, everything imaginable. Sometimes, no is not a bad answer to give. ....

We were at Katrina, Neko developed no ill effects but we were very careful where we put our dogs on the ground and did most work with human only searchers. Trust where we were you really did not need a k9 to tell you were the remains were. In most of the houses where the victims lay, you could smell it at the door. I tried to warn another team in the area about the risks about putting their k9s to work in the area, one handler insisted his dog would be fine and his k9 had severe chemical burns to paws and belly within an hour (I wanted to hurt that arrogant person I really did). Just because your dog is willing to work for you in an area, you have to be responsible and decide if you should.

We were asked to go back after our first trip and assist to clear the 9th ward. Declined due to high risks, not a good place for a dog to be. I know people who did go back in but it was not for me.

I agree. sometimes, no is the logical answer and folks have a tendency to think that admitting limitations will damage their reputation. We k9 cops will say h*ll no in a minute.
