Default bark on command

is it true that for a dog to bite on the sleeve that it must be trained to bark on command first?

also if you train a dog to bark on command then that dog really shouldnt be left alone with children or be allowed to roam freely if you have guests around?

thanks

No. A dog is quite capable of biting without barking.

The second question really depends on a number of factors.

Sasha barks on command, but I really don't feel she's a threat to children or my guests because of it. I would never leave her alone with kids, but it's not because of that; it's because it's just a dangerous thing to do.

I don't know if I'd ever continue to own a dog that I couldn't leave alone with my kids. The dog needs to realize when its place in the family is, and a dog that can't be trusted around children doesn't know that then.

Its not that I dont trust my dog, its that I dont trust kids enough to know what is ok and what isnt in every situation, because they are just that - kids. Kids don't know not to grab ears, step on paws, play with tails, lay on top of a sleeping dog, etc. There is no way I would leave even the most docile dog alone with a child.

Me either! A dog that you can't trust to leave with your own kids is not worth a darn!

Obviously we are talking about kids old enough to leave by themselves in the first place.

When our child was old enough to come home from school by himself, he would take the dog out and play with her and also we were secure enough in him and our dog that he could bring friends over to play. Never a thought in our mind that the dog could not be truested with them.

Could not imagine having a normal GSD that we couldn't trust with kids.

BTW, what would teaching them a command like "bark on command" have to do with trusting the dog around kids?

If your dogs temperament and nerves are what they should be w/ good breeding you should have zero worries about leaving your dog alone. My kids are 6 and 3 and I don't hesitate to leave them alone with him even while he's eating. My kids can put their hands in his food bowl and even pull food out of his mouth. My dog is now 7 and he knows his role in the family. He knows that no matter what, it's not OK to bite anyone in my family, especially since he's at the bottom of the pack.

Koos Hassing once told me never to leave a dog alone with young children. He wasn't talking just about his dogs. I agree. But my kids are in college.

I don't think I could have a dog that I couldn't leave alone with my kids assuming that the kid(s) were old enough to be left alone by themselves!

Was he saying that the dogs were untrustworthy because he was afraid that the dog would harm the kid? Or that the kid might harm the dog?
