Looking for a transport for an 80 lb German Shepherd male from a shelter in Allegan, MI to myself (the adopter) to somewhere in Southern or central Indiana. I'm way south but willing to meet halfway to pick him up. My paperwork has already gone through and I've been approved; I also have a neuter contract with them.

You should just make a road trip. Maybe over this long holiday weekend?
Whoever was willing to pull him(shelter volunteer?)will possibly keep him for a day or two if the shelter is closed on the day you drive up. It may be a week or more before you can get everyone scheduled to do short legs.... Then he sits in the shelter that much longer. If you do set up a transport you may want to set a date, have certain legs available, meet-up locations and a timeline of those legs. Then people can easier see if they are available to help. I would require crate travel and make sure he has on a martingale no-slip collar. And anyone helping you should have reference from a previous transport for the safety of the dog. |

If there is no way to get him even halfway I'll make the trip. I wasn't looking for someone to take him all the way here; initially they were going to meet me halfway but a volunteer changed plans. If I could get someone to drive just south of Indianapolis that would be about halfway. Of course you're right about the references. The crate and the no-slip collar shouldn't be difficult to arrange. How far would you be willing to go? |

I could go as far as the border with him, maybe south bend.
Let me know if you're interested and what days work.

Whoever helps with this transport should be sure of where they are helping to send this dog. Not pointing fingers at you Arabian Nights, just a general thing we say for all dogs and all adopters.
Over and over, we say this, because people seem to forget.

I am shocked that a shelter is releasing a dog to a private adoptive home without the adopter even meeting the dog.
I understand many shelters don't and obviously can't do home visits or reference checks, etc, but to send a dog on a transport with an over the phone adoption to a private home that's not a reputable or at least licensed rescue is kind of scary. Also, no offense meant, but this kind of situation is the kind that goes right until it goes very very wrong. What do you plan to do if this dog is not as you expect or things don't work out? |
