Van was fortunate enough to be found by two dog lovers this past weekend, while he was attempting to "hitch a ride" on a busy street in OH. Since he had head and ear wounds that were bleeding it was initially believed he may have been shot. A Ranger took Van to the Richland County Dog Warden and the ladies knew they should immediately look for rescue who could better advocate for medical attention. Long story short, thankfully, Van was not shot. It is believed the wounds were self inflicted from severe scratching due to pyderma. On Monday we began working with a wonderful vet in Mansfield who gave him immediate attention, stabilizing him as he had a rampant staph infection and his skin was painful to the touch and he has sores and scabs covering his entire body (hard to see in the pics). All the while in pain, Van endeared himself this week to the shelter staff, one in particular who help transport him to the vet. She has been wonderful. Van is currently in vet boarding, as he was sedated today so his wounds could be probably cleaned and the hair shaved away to permit proper healing. He will be staying with Jan until he is a bit more rested and has been on antibiotics for a bit and then headed to us in NY. He has a bit of a road ahead of him, but we will get him there.
