Default Where are the rescued GSDs of working lines now!

Whenever there is a working line dog in rescue or shelter everyone gasps and figures it is an anomoly. And I think because they are not bred in the volume that other lines are (German show, American show, American BYB) they are not going to be seen as often. However my new little theory is that they may be surrendered in the same ratio as the other lines so are seen just as often. I also believe that the "look" of a sable is becoming more popular and so unethical puppy producers are making and marketing them more. So there is a tip of the iceberg thing that I am fearing.

ANYWAY! I thought we could start a thread of pictures/stories of dogs either known to be from working lines that you had in rescue, as fosters or adopted, in shelters, etc. or thought to be based on structure, drives, and color. I am thinking of a few and hope they post!

Pretty sure Cash is either working lines or mostly working lines. I adopted him from the animal shelter through Austin GSD rescue (they facilitated the adoption from the shelter). He's a big, lanky, happy, extremely drivey boy! I'm glad I adopted him instead of him going into the rescue program, as he's been a bit of a challenge.

Something else we could discuss in this thread is the difficulty of finding good adoptive homes for working line dogs. Most people who adopt rescue dogs just want a pet and many are getting their first GSD ever. Your average rescue adopter just isn't equipped to handle the drives and energy of a working line dog.
Cash:

Trooper is currently for adoption through AGSDR. His foster parents say they're having a hard time finding an adopter who can handle him.

And I just saw Zander, a Czech import GSD who is a courtesy listing on the AGSDR website.

I remember a few months ago I had the ability to work with another AGSDR dog who was undoubtedly working lines. He was all black and was returned twice due to the adopters not being able to give him the exercise and mental stimulation that he needed. Also my very first foster dog was a working line. He was returned once and ended up working as an SAR dog.

We had several working line gsds come through BGSR when I volunteered with them.

One, Kitzy, was returned twice (one placement was as an SAR dog but she wasn't good with their other dog) and was in foster care for a year. She finally got placed with a police department in Minnesota. She's a patrol dog now and lives with her handler.

2 of my 3 rescues have been working line. Luther was listed on his shelter paperwork as a GSD mix - mix was written in different handwriting and a different pen than the owner's handwriting on his turn in sheet. Guess the shelter workers thought they knew better than his original owner! He was a DDR, built like a bear and the working mind. Loved that boy, he could do anything. When Luther walked into a room, he was Bogart, he owned it.

Morgan I pulled myself from a shelter, brought in as a stray. Her shelter was better versed in what a working line dog looked like so she was listed as GSD female, apx 6 months. I have always believed her to be w german working. She's a blonde sable, tricolored fir, bits of red here and there, no part of her is solid black except the diamond on her forehead. She's my enforcer, there are rules and she insists everyone follow them! Crazy prey drive on that one.

My other rescue was a pretty boy, no clue as to his back ground but he did not have the brains of a working line dog. He was also soft as a grape!

Hi,

Two months ago I got a working line rescue from the Orange County GSD rescue in CA. I saw a post on this board about Doc, 2 years old (he's actually 3), working lines, black, owner surrendered. I went to meet him, and next thing you know, he was in the car coming home with me.

I would post a picture, but he isn't still long enough to be photographed. LOL.

Just kidding, he's the best! He was a kennel dog for three years, and is now a house dog and doing great. No problems at all. Superb temperament. High energy for sure, but I'm training him for AKC obedience and he loves the attention.

He pesters my female GSD and he gets plenty of exercise playing ball and tug and is very happy. We seem to be a good match for each other. I love him!!

Eventually I'll get pictures and post them.

Molly

I had to chuckle at this thread.....I don't have him now (he's gone to his permanent home) but I'd be willing to bet that the little pupper, Milo, is a working dog. I never saw such an energetic, driven, curious puppy. We'll have to wait and see if Myoung gets back to us on how he's doing with his new mama.

Here's . . . . . . Venus

Adopted June 2007; skinny stray from the Columbia, SC animal shelter via Noble Shepherd Rescue.

I was thinking of getting a friend for my very active NSR rescue GSD; then I saw her picture on the URGENT board.

I absolutely love her beautiful coat and admire her every day. She draws attention when out and people have asked me: Is she a Belgian? They come in black too??? Is she a mix???

She has a major prey drive and she loves balls (and food). While she does love her brother, she is definitely not fond of other dogs. She also hates anything with wheels and loves to be a part of my pack!

Pretty girl

Squirrel Hunting

Playing soccer

Hello, thanks for having this Urgent board and thanks for saving me!!!
