Default our rescue experience....

we had to put down our 13.5 yr. old shepherd, kascha in january. as much as she tried, she could just not move anymore. not only did i lose my best friend, but my "shadow" no longer was with me. even when she couldn't get up off the couch, her eyes still followed me.
i couldn't shake my empty feeling, so we began talking about getting another dog. i wanted a pup, but my wife, the animal planet queen, got me looking on petfinder. when kascha came home from the groomer they used to tie a bandana around her neck, and patty came across a pic of a gsd at animal control with, of course, a bandana around her neck.
we made the five hour drive to animal control on the mi/ind border and brought along our two year old adopted dog bisi (lab/rottie mix), to make sure she got along with the prospective new addition.
it almost made me cry when they brought elle, her name there, out. her ears were pulled back and her tail was buried between her legs. it turned out her weight was 59 lbs and patty discovered that she had a cracked tooth. her coat felt like steel wool and you could easily see her ribs and butt bone and she also had the foulest breath- even for a dog!!!! they informed us, that she was on the run for almost three months before they could finally catch her in a trailer park. she even swimmed across a small lake to avoid them once!!! it must have been some sort of karma, because they brought her in the same day we put kascha down.
anyways, after consulting w/ our vet about the tooth, we decided to take her home. the poor thing shook the entire five hours back up north. obviously neglected, we soon discovered she had been abused too.
this sad story could continue on, but i would go way past the thousand word limit.
we own a resort on a lake, so jada, her new name, and her buddy bisi have plenty of land to chase critters and play. they are quite amusing as they wrestle on the beach and then drink half the lake in one sitting. jada also enjoys terrorizing our fourteen year old cat, mokie.
patty makes natural food and biscuits for the girls, so jada is now up to 83 lbs. and her coat is so soft.... her tooth was cracked to the root and while being spayed, the vet pulled the tooth and scraped away the tartar. she is still a little skittish around our guests, but a lot of patience and work has brought her a long way since our guests first arrived in may.
both girls survived biting porcupines -ouch- and love their daily romp in the woods. it has been a wonderful odyssey with jada and we are quite fulfilled by our decision.
although we still miss kascha terribly, jada and bisi keep us hopping and happy everyday. thanks for reading our story....

A beautiful story and a beautiful girl... Thanks so much for sharing. All she needed was someone to love her and make her feel that she was important. You and your wife did just that. I know Kascha is proud and I'm also betting that she had something to do with Jada coming into your life. We can never, ever see enough pictures, so please post more and of course some of Bisi!

Congratulations to you all - it's obviously a match made in heaven!
