You don't think it is an anxiety/restless thing? like maybe when you fall to sleep, he gets nervous and is not sure how to settle down? or misses the other dog?
My older GSD use to pace through the house whining at night. I never did figure out why but I got her a bed to sleep next to me at night and now she sleeps through the night.
I crate the others and there are times they act like they have to go pee, but then run outside to grab a toy in the yard at 3 am!! LOL

It's always a good idea to test him for a UTI.

Good question., but no.
This little pooper does it during the day too. When I put him in his crate at night he can see me and although he is not thrilled with it, he does this groan of sorts, whines for 20 seconds, FLOPS down, sighs, and then not a peep until that 3 hour mark.
His wanting to go out reminds me of Lassie Come Home like he has some kind of alarm in him that every 3 hours that he has to go outside.
I am thinking he is used to being out there a lot. We'll go for walks, play out there, etc. There are too many times he has fooled me in between the 3 hours and just wants to roll around in the snow.
At 1 am he definitely had a decent pee as I watched him out there.
Same thing with after 4.

I get that from my wife all the time, but she usually adds "looking" to the end of the sentence.

It could be lots of things. Like I said, our dogs are able to go overnight with no problem. We do not ever limit their water, it's always out there for them. (I use how much water they drink as my "barometer" as to how cold it's going to be overnight......the more water they drink, the colder it's going to be. You'd be surprised how accurate that can be)
He could still be gettng used to "having someone" around and is just making sure that you're still around. He could also be indicating/sensing that something is outside and wants to check it out.
When we got Cassie, for the first few weeks, she would lay in kitchen, by the sliding doors out to the deck and whine/cry.
She knew there were bunnies and sometimes deer out there and whe want to chase them.
He sounds like he's doing great and at least he is letting you know instead of finding a place and going.

[QUOTE=CassandGunnar;2021377]I get that from my wife all the time, but she usually adds "looking" to the end of the sentence.

LOL!!!!!!!!

Never has to wonder where I am since during the day he is always usually at my feet. At night, his crate is next to my bed.

He could also be indicating/sensing that something is outside and wants to check it out.

OR..he could just like being a pain in my doopah!
When he was out there at 4:10 AM he started growling, barking and his head was following something on the hill behind our home. No houses, just forest back there mind you.
I felt the hairs rise on my neck because I was so glad HE could see something, I sure could not!
I thought of that Far Side cartoon with the two dogs sitting in front of a basement door, The 1 dog said to the other, "Want to freak her out? Just stare at this door and start growling"

What I am planning on starting today is to mark down the time Chance has gone out, and extend the time in gradual increments.
So, let's say he acts like he has to go out again in 3 hours. After that will be 3 hours 15 mins, and so on. Train him to hold his bladder.
This is the only thing I can think of to try.
Agreed, sounds like a great plan. My previous dog had ready access to the outside so we had to retrain her to hold it longer in the winter when we kept her inside for longer periods of time. Worked out fine. Most dogs are VERY routine oriented and you have to change them in increments.
