I'm glad all the dogs will be safe.
I don't think anyone was on the breeder's side ... I think some folks just wanted more info. We've all seen dogs on this board, which have looked way worse than these dogs. I think that was the point, which was trying to be made.
It is absolutely horrible that these dogs were drinking such bacteria-filled water and living in such bad conditions, with no love or companionship but each other.
But, unfortunately, it is also way more common than any of us want. I spent three years working with neighbors up the street who were backyard breeders of Bassets. However, I had to keep my opinion to myself and repulsion hidden for the sake of the dogs. I brought disinfectant and pest control products to them, along with helping them apply it. I cringed each time I was told another litter had been born and waited patiently for them to sell their pups in the Freecycle paper and when no more were bought or the pups got to old (eight months to them), I would talk them into giving me the pups to get into rescue. Finally, after three years of gentle prodding, they neutered their male. Man, did I do the happy dance.
But, in the eyes of the law, they were doing nothing wrong. Their dogs had food, water and shelter, albeit in the backyard with little to no love. So, I did the next-best thing by not alienating them and staying on top of the issue, so there was at least a chance of a proper life for the dogs I pulled.

They look to be in good shape to me, there's a big diff with a neglected dog. Do I need to post what our rescue looked like when he was shelter bound ?

I would like to kinda know where the OP popped out of & has since to comment, sorry.

Just hope this gets resolved & all works out for the dogs & breeder.
I have posted since, I didn't post this here looking for an argument. I'm a college student with hardly enough time to do all my homework on time let alone follow a board where everyone's looking to pick a fight!

I signed up for the site when my family got a german shepherd almost two years ago and did more reading than posting. I see the german shepherds at athens animal control and know there's an "urgent" section here so I post them for their sake. Why should I have to defend that?

I didn't see these dogs come in, hear their story, or take their photos. All I did was look at the website and see 9 dogs who need help. Just because something fishy is going on with the breeder and AC doesn't mean the dogs shouldn't get help. They have no say in where they go; they can't tell AC whether they were treated badly or not. This ISN'T about the breeder. It's about the DOGS!

charlie boy thank you so much, SO MUCH, for posting to help these dogs. please let the negativity slide off and know that probably because of your original post it appears that nine lives are going to be made ever so much better!!! you are so right that it's about the dogs, thank you AGAIN for helping these dear animals who have no way to help themselves.

Thanks Katieliz... I really can't believe, though, that someone was picking on me for trying to get the word out about these guys, and like I'd done something wrong by not knowing the whole story and setting everything straight...

It seems other people have more of a grasp on the situation than me, so I'll only notify you if their info on the website changes and this thread is still in urgent...

Unfortunately, they can get matted, but the mats are slightly different and not as tangled compared to a long haired dog. Under poor conditions, coats become dirty and sticky. When double coated dogs blow their undercoat, the undercoat then cannot shed, instead it sticks and cakes in. It looks like a scaly armor, the caked in tufts of undercoat feel like connected scales. In long coated dogs, it's a more solid armor b/c there is tangling with the long hair.

The way to get it out is to soak the dog in a tub. Once the fur masses are softened by water and suds, and you start dematting in the water, it is less difficult dematting a stock coat than a long coat b/c only the undercoat but not the guard hair in a stock coat tangle.

The smell of such a dirt caked coat is unbelievable. You need to wash everything that has been in contact, or throw it out. Imagine living in that coat.

Please volunteer for rescue. You learn a lot that you don't know from keeping your own in good shape. And you help a dog. It is not about us, it is about the DOGS.

Thank you to the people who cleaned out these dogs and showed them kindness, thank you to CharlieBoy for posting them, and thank you to the rescue organizations that stepped up to take them.

"...thank you to the rescue organizations that stepped up to take them."

This!
This is why this board exists.

Thank you everyone who put in the time and effort to help these dogs especially when their fate seemed so bleak...

So they are all rescued? We got a mom and her pups in June from this situation. Let me know if any are available.
