I am willing here in Pittsburgh. if transport can be arranged I would foster and find them homes. I live very close to Animal Friends if I run into issues.

I would also probably adopt a pup or two

I wonder if PilotNPaws would fly them there since the pups are so young so they don't have to go on transport..

I am so worried about this little family and the other families and dogs there and the lack of good communication there(ugh) concerns me so...

I will post again on Tuesday after I have them in my care so that everyone knows that they are safe and out of harms way!!!

Thanks, everyone.

Not sure I have all of this right - but I am thinking... truly thinking about this... any advice anyone?
From my past experience with fostering several litters, it is best to start handling them as soon as possible to start getting them used to being handled. Yes, mom does do most of the work for the first couple weeks- feeding, cleaning etc.-but they do need to get used to handling. They need to get used to things in the world that we take for granted. If this is done when the puppy is really young, it will be happy and confident in any new situations it may encounter later.
Others may feel differently, but this is just from my personal experiences.

Also here is a chart that I found about puppy socialization:

Quote:
Quote:Practical Socialisation – What to do
Keep the environment friendly and safe, but not unnaturally quiet
Keep the mother present during socialisation, if she is friendly and confident

Weeks 1 – 3
Pick up and hold each puppy gently every day
Stroke and examine all over

Week 4
Handle each puppy individually every day
Novel object placed in with puppies daily
Cloths with different smells
Provide obvious sleeping place with easy access to toilet area

What’s new in weeks 4-5
Arrange for new adults and children to visit
Teach puppies to play with toys
Familiarise with handling and gentle restraint until accepted
Familiarise with collars and leads
Provide items to chew
Meet cats and other animals on property
Carry individually to road to see traffic
Opportunity for exploration of new surfaces
Individual isolation in view of others for few minutes

What’s new in week 5 onwards
Take out to meet other animals and people
Simple training using reward-based methods should begin
Lead training should begin
Short car journeys
More individual outings as they get older
Short periods of isolation for each puppy
Tasting different foods, dried and wet
Take out at appropriate time for toilet training

Hey!

Thank you so much for the puppy socialization calendar. This is perfect!!! It is just the kind of thing I have been looking around for.

I have been wrapped up in getting everything coordinated and set up for the puppies and momma. Am still workin' on trying to secure a puppy play pen for 4-5 weeks, but at least I have some time for that - would like to have it so I can move it around to different surfaces and such - like grass, sidewalk areas, gravel, wood, carpet etc.

I have secured a whelping box and tarp for my floor as well as lots of old towels, blankets etc.

I have a collar and lead for momma and food dishes that I plan to keep in her room with her but a bit elevated so that when the pups start to move around, they cannot fall into the water dish or what not.

Can anyone think of anything else I need that I have not thought of?

I know they may need to be bottle fed for supplemental nutrition but vet will confirm that (if needed) on Tuesday afternoon at their appointment.

Let me know if anyone else has advice or suggestions on anything I am missing.

Thanks, All! This has truly been a team effort -can't wait to update everyone on their progress.

This might help too. I've had two litters did early neuro stim on the second and there was a clear difference between the two. It's very interesting stuff!
