I don't think Pam is on this board much, we will make sure she knows this.

Thank you for asking about Esther. Here's a brief update I just sent Katherine:
I wish I had more updates on Esther. She saw the dr at GVS Tuesday morning and we STILL don't have the pathology results. She's hanging out at Dale's (he's the founder of the rescue, ACRF) and his house is near GVS. She goes to his office during the day and stays at his house at night. Her ankle really hurts her. If her main problem is deep bone infection, it might take a few months to eradicate. I don't know yet when we can begin dealing with the heartworms. I'm worried about her bones, ligaments because of the muscle atrophy. I'd like to get her swimming as soon as she's able. Also, the vets believe she's older than we thought - maybe 3 or so. She's on Clindamycin (300 mg/2x day) and Deramaxx until the culture results are in. She's eating well. I'll post again when I have info and pictures. |

Esther was using her leg more, playing with other dogs, then she started favoring it again. Swelling increased and spread to toes. First cultures didn't show anything. On 12/17/09 took sample (size of a lemon) from ankle & sent to lab. Also, checked lymph node on leg. Expect results of these tests by Tues 12/22/09; set to meet with Dr. Cross at 3:00p to discuss options. Surprise - she was already spayed. Now she's bandaged and drainage tube is installed. Still on Clindamycin, Deramaxx, but limited activity. She's still very happy. Thank you for keeping Esther in your thoughts.

Esther's final diagnosis was cancer with no hope for effective treatment. I used this forum to learn as much as I could about cancer in dogs and I'm astounded at the number of cases, just here in this group of GSD owners. I'm so very sorry. Esther was a wonderful dog and we miss her so much. Thank you.
