Default Van From Ohio

A little background on Van:

Van was extremely fortunate enough to be found by two dog lovers while he was attempting to "hitch a ride" on a busy street in OH several weeks ago. Since he had head and ear wounds that were bleeding it was initially believed he may have been shot, however, we now believe he was hit by a car – due to road rash injuries and body tenderness.

A Ranger took Van to the Richland County Dog Warden and the ladies knew they should immediately look for rescue who could better advocate for medical attention.

All the while in pain, Van endeared himself to the shelter staff, one in particular who helped to transport him to the vet near the shelter for us. She was wonderful and made sure he was watched out for. His ear and head wounds were cleaned and the hair shaved away for healing. He was put on a course of antibiotics and some pain killers also.

Then Jan, with Dog’s Hope, brought him to her home to mend a bit more before transporting to BDBH in NY. She also took him to her vet for us for further diagnostics and all in all it went well. He didn't have to be sedated for the exam and the vet did feel that Van’s head and ear injuries were road rash and that letting them air and heal on their own was the way to go. He also felt that the fur loss and “wounds” on his lower body were due to a severe allergy to fleas and that he's just getting over it. He also agreed with the vet in Mansfield that Van does have a staph infection going on. The one thing we did not know was that Van had a very bad case of kennel cough. So, he has been treated for that also.

We now feel that Van is stable enough to move to BDBH and continue his care with us on his road to finding a forever home!

He arrived in upstate NY today from his temp foster home in OH (with Jan/Dogs Hope). Below are pics of Van taken by Jan while he was staying with her to recover a bit before transport. He still has a ways to go for recovery and I will update with more pics soon. He is a very very good boy and very loving.

This beautiful boy sure had a bunch of guardian angels watching over him. He's just gorgeous and you can tell by those eyes what a sweetie he is. Nice save BDBH and everyone else involved!

On one hand you say "oh this poor boy" and on the other you say "oh this fortunate boy". Thank goodness for the good samaritans that were willing to stop and let this boy "hitch a ride". He is one lucky guy!!!
