Default Christmas morning 4 years ago

Back in 2004, at 8:00 Christmas morning, the rescue hot-line rang. When the caller selected the dreaded option #2, the "give up your dog" option, I was enraged.

What sort of low life would want to dump their dog first thing Chrimastmas morning???

I snatched up the receiver and barked "Hello, how can I help you" in the nastiest, surliest voice that I could could manage. (which is actually pretty considerable!)

Then the scared voice said, "Hi, this ACO Robertson (I can't remember the actual name now!) from Prince William Animal Control". So sorry to bother you on Christmas but we have a female GSD with a huge wound in her neck and I am trying to find some help for her so I don't have to euthanize her this morning".

Boy, did I ever feel like a major jackass. I apologized profusely and told her that of course we would take her!

We ended up naming this poor soul Happy Holiday and she was the sweetest, kindest, most soulful creature you could imagine. She got adopted by a wonderful family with a couple of kids, cats and a big home with a huge yard.

I travel by the road where she lives pretty frequently and every time I do, I think back to that Christmas morning and the poor animal control officer that I frightened!

This is a wonderful story, thank you for sharing!

Every Christmas time I squeeze in one extra foster dog into my home (I can work from home much of the time overt the holidays) - this is a Christmas gift from me to myself. This year's guy is a tough one, plays very rough and it hurts. A tough and challenging Chrismas gift.
