Does anyone have any tips on dealing with separation anxiety in a re-homed Shepherd pup? He freaked out and tore apart his crate when I left him today for a little over 2 hours(our 2nd day together)
When I walk out of the room he whines and follows me.
He also has this bizarre habit of crying when I pet him.
My BT would cry when I petted her but it was because she was happy. Oh my.....and it wasn't because she didn't get loving all of the time which may have made her a little bit on the spoilt side but you would have thought I was killing her but it was just the excitement and the happiness she felt when I cuddled with her.
Your poor pup was left outside for 3 weeks. He is confused, he is worried. It will take time.
Its not separation anxiety. He's got no idea what is going on. Get him to the vet to get healthy. Do a two week shutdown. No expectations on him at all. Keep anything he can reach and tear up away from the crate. Do crate games with him.
Vet this afternoon, and 2 week shutdown on the schedule for learning about this morning after chores are done. I found him a nice bone for his crate, and I will look into crate games. Sounds like something the 11 and 8 year old would have fun with :smile2:
I love Crate Games. It's totally transferable to beds and platforms. it teaches the dog to go to something regardless of distance and teaches impulse control. The DVD is about $35 and worth every cent.
Everything you are planning on doing will make him that much more adoptable. Can you touch base with the original owner and see if he showed any of htese issues with them? Maybe you can determine if it's the stress or if it's just the dog that way.
