Our GSD Sherman is 6 months old and until recently we were able to clip his nails with nail clippers but we accidentally clipped too much off and as a result will not let us try again. We use high value treats and even try holding him but he squirms away. Any suggestions, I heard a dremel type tool can work ? Thank you.
Is it just a standard dremel are there ones with varying speeds ? I ask this because I have a dremel with only one speed and it is very loud and might just scare him more lol.
Are you nervous at all after accidentally cutting his quick? if so he might be sensing this nervousness.
Just get him used to touching his paw (no cutting) basically pick up his foot and treat.
Then I would work on the restraint portion in the same way I find a "bear hug" to be the best for nail trims give him treats each time, and overtime increase the length of the restraint.
Eventually bring the two together. This is how I retrained my parents dog who would scream and flail as soon as you touched his foot now he thinks nail trims are the best thing ever. Best of Luck
When Max was a pup I would pick up his paw squeeze his nail with my finger and use a clicker near his toe nail (makes a nail clipping sound ) and many treats. Max has black nails I have cut the quick in the past. If I do this I always make sure I trim very little next time. I then use a dremel to get the nail a bit shorter. I just had liked to get him used to both. While you are doing this just breathe. I don't restrain I let him get into a comfortable position.
Dremel 7700 from Home Depot works great! http://pin.it/jdR45qj
