Default 8 month anxiety round strangers

Hi everyone,

My dexter doesn't like strangers at all, woman he isn't as bad but men are worse, he will jump up and make a strange noise when they come close, sometimes jump at them or sometimes me, he is fine with people he know, both men and woman. It's so much worse if he is tired.
he really frightened my neighbour the other day who he met for the first time, we were on our way back from a long walk and I knew he wanted to get home but my neighbour asked to see him, dexter jumped up and started barking!!!!

He did it to the vet today aswell (because he was feeling very anxious) the vet thinks it is something he will grow out of and once he has been castrated (in 3 weeks) it will also help but just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to stop it?

Thank you

your fine. our oldest one doesn't like strangers. never will. not people reaching at her face or approaching her in general. will usually growl. that's caused by lack of confidence. group agility classes can help. some dogs will just always be that way. more likely if they weren't socialized properly. look at it this way. you have a good excuse for stranger on walks that want to do a stop and chat about dogs, or worse pet the dogs and you want to keep going. tell them your dog is friendly buy shy and move on.

Our dexter did not do well with strangers, we got him at 8 weeks and he was in social situations everyday but was always nervous and fearful of men and some women, dexter lacks confidence. We saw a giant improvement when we got the shiggs, she exudes confidence and loves to be touched by everyone..she even waits for our neighbor to get out if his car so she can welcome him home lol, I guess we just accepted dexters issues and moved on, we ignored the frantic barking and ignored the bull crap he put off but because shiggs loved everyone dex was sideline guy just watching on as shiggs soaked up the love. Dex has now stopped his issues and actually engages in getting pets from strangers now, I should add he was also neutured so that may of taken him down a few pegs.

Thank you. He is so well socialised and we use to go to puppy school, we are going to start going back
I really hope he grows out of it as its scary for people and makes me nervous and put him on a lead as soon as anyone comes near :-(

I have an anxious pup. It did not change when we got him neutered and it is not something they grow out of without your help. There is a fearful dog group on Facebook that you can join that might give you some ideas but I would for sure talk to your trainer and maybe find a different vet.
