Default 4 mos old puppy nipping at kids.

We've had our puppy since he was 8 weeks old. I have been including both of my kids in his training of sit, stay, leave it, down and they have done great. Rocky listens to them when treats are involved.

The problem is at times if they pass him he'll nip at them especially my 5 year old. Recently my daughter has been catching nips on the hands when she tries to pet him. This wasn't bothering me because I know it's normal for a puppy to mouth people especially while teething.

What worries me is today Rocky did a low growl and nipped at my 7 year old. I've been reading up and trying everything. Has anyone gone through this? If so do they grow out of it?

This thread Puppy BITING!!! Teaching Bite Inhibition has lots of advice on training puppies not to nip. It isn't something they outgrow by themselves.

hard to say..

Have you monitored your children with the pup? Have they ever teased or hurt the dog?

Children will be children and dogs will be dogs, but, if I were you, I'd carefully monitor how they interact.

Is there a possibility that the pup is hurting?

Nipping, running and chasing is all normal.

Was the pup 'resource guarding' a toy or bone?

Watch carefully for clues.

Lucie is 6 months old and just sometimes still nips at the kids especially when they get her all worked up and excited. I let the kids know that when they get her excited she will nip and therefore need to stop the behavior but every now and then even when I pet her she tries to nip my hand it's her way of saying hey let's play.
