TUG of War
My 3.5 months old gsd pup is obsessed with playing tug off war.
His ball drive is medium. Food drive is high. But above all is the drive for tug of war. But leaves on command.
I run with the tug he loves to chase and catch the tug and then play tug of war
Are these good signs for protection work?
Opinions are very welcome.
A pup with toy/tug and food drives is the best pup to have for any and ALL training!
Get started with those puppy classes so you can take advantage of it all.
My dog is the same way! Yesterday I was teaching her how to take her kong and carry it around the house. She wouldn't get it and kept trying to paw at it to get a treat. But the second I got her tug she learned like that! Its crazy how making a little change can make such a big difference :)
It's a good indicator that your dog has some drive in him. It's also a good indicator that you can use tug as a reward for more advanced obedience.
Are these good signs for protection work? Maybe maybe not, depends on who you asked. When my pup was evaluated the trainer just wanted to see if he'll play with a flirt pole and 2 seconds later said yes he can do Schutzhund. Other people want to wait and see. And yet others (myself included) think a drivey dog will help get over certain obstacles and mask some deficiencies if they exist but in no way is indicative of the dog's potential for protection work. The only way to know is to start training in a good club, and see how he pans out
Thank you all for your kind.
Unfortunately I live in a place with no pup or dog trainers. I have done the basic obedience training my self watching tutorials in you tube.
However there is a school about 180 kms away from my place, and I have to leave the pup there for 1 month. They offer protection training.
So i am wondering whether send my pup now at 3.5 months age or wait till he gets at least 6 to seven months? What should I do ?
