Pawing at hand

So when I point my finger at my puppy and talk to her, she lifts her paw up in the air and places it on my hand and pushes it down. Is this common, and what does it mean?

She's telling you it's rude to point ;) lol

My dog is horrible with pawing at me to get me to play, it's something I would discourage, because when they are full grown, it HURTS.

 agree with Blackshep. You may want to start teaching her to shake hands, I did that with my aussie who was a pawer. It redirected the behavior nicely.

It already hurts like **** when she paws at me...I have red marks all up and down my arms (and I do keep her claws short). She does it a lot when she's playing, I guess because she sees us humans using our hands to play, and we've taught her that teeth when playing is not okay. I wouldn't mind if she just batted at my hands and arms, but she digs her claws in and pulls down. Any suggestions?

If my dog does anything inappropriate during play, play stops. She'll pick up quickly that if she hooks her claws on you, play stops and she gets ignored.

Why are you pointing at her?

This is a great game for teaching impulse control - try spending a few minutes every day working on it:

I used part of Halo's lunch kibble doing this when she was a puppy.

I have a habit of pointing/gesturing with my hands when I'm talking to anything, and I do it a lot with her
