My puppy is 7 months old and I have just recently moved back home from florida with the dog. My parents have a year and a half old Black Lab. My puppy will not stop trying to play all the time. I dont mind her playing every now and again but after awhile it gets annoying and she needs to learn when playtime is and when it isnt. Is there any way possible that I can teach my dog when to stop playing on command and a proper way to enforce it without yelling or getting frustrated?
I learned the hard way that GSD are big play biting dogs more than any other dog I've been around. Lots of people on this site were very helpful with my biting issues. I'm sure you'll get some great advice. Some things I tried were the flirt pole & kongs filled with different treats, peanut butter, canned pumpkin,& bananas. My girl still has a big biting issue. We're keeping persistent with the vocal commands to ward her off, even replacing one of my limbs with a toy.
Your dog is still young & all young dogs are very playful. Hang in there I'm sure some terrific advice is coming your way, from someone who is more knowledgeable than I.
I'd start working on a long down/stay perhaps....seems to me, once a certain duration in a down/stay is accomplished, the dog will just settle in and remain calm and maybe even take a nap...
Or laying down the law of the land which doesn't allow for your pup to call the shots, might help as well. Getting a dog used to "earning" rewards goes a long way.
And, yes...those young dogs have a pile of energy which is hard to quash but one could redirect the dog to burn some of it off in other ways...more productive "play"...beginner tracking games possibly.
My dog loves to play...and when she lets me know it's playtime..we most always have a short training session beforehand....or I make her wait until I am ready.......she does know the command " wait a second " which is more like a few minutes and she chills out, knowing her proper behavior will lead to a hearty session of frisbee or some other exercise.
I would make sure your pup has an outlet for that energy. Where it is safe, a good bit of daily 'off-leash' walking is ideal. Our soon to be 6 month old is so much better behave & calmer after a good dose of exercise.
I agree with the long down stay. I also use a "leave it" command.... It usually goes "look at me" command "leave it" command, followed by "down stay" command. So far she is up to 2 hours in a down stay.
