Try really tiring him out and then brushing him? If he's really tired after a walk or exercise he might just let you do it. Or instead of his normal treats.....get an extra special treat that he ONLY has during grooming....he'll associate grooming with having something VERY yummy. Maybe chicken or liver? Don't start grooming at his head either, start talking to him and gently stroke him and get his attention on you and then start to groom his back behind him (keeping his attention on you). Those are the only things I can think of.

Have you tried any other type of brush. This is what I keep on hand to brush my dog: a stainless steal comb, a saw toothed horse brush, a wire brush, a pair of soft tight leather gloves and a vacuum. Plus a good treat like a bully stick. Let him chew on the stick while you groom him. Pups are curious, let puppy check out anything you use on him even if he wants to carry it. Work lightly on the body where he likes to be touched first. Start slow and easy working your way up from short to longer periods of time.

They have brushes that are like gloves and have the rubber bristles on them, maybe you could get him used to the idea of brushing with that? Along with the extra special treats idea :)

I just think pups don't like to be touched in general. Every time I try to pet him, he tries to mouth my hands. Only time he'll let me pet him is if he's like.. sleeping or in the process of falling asleep.

Hmmm... Maybe he would let you if you gave him a Kong or some other kind of chew toy first? That's all I can think of that might help.

I think you have to be gentle and persistent. Don't do an all out combing session. Just a little bit at the time. I went through that with Beau on coat and nails and it just took a LOT of patience on my part and treats for small successes. No issues now.

Ditto on the wearing him out first.
