My 5 month old pup went for my father-in-law today.

I've a 5 month old female GSD/golden retriever mix. We got her at 8 weeks and she's always been nervous around people, especially men, and other dogs. I've done basic training classes with her.

Today we were visiting our in-laws and she is nervous of my father-in-law so I've got him to give her treats the few times she's been visiting. She was fine and we were there for about 2 hours. She was asleep when he walked in the door & she growled, showed her teeth & then lunged at him but my husband grabbed her in time.

Everyone got a total shock. She is only 5 months old. What can we do to prevent her being an aggressive dog? Will she grow out of this?
Any advice welcome

Yes, I can understand how upsetting that would be. But I think she was just startled out of her nap and being uneasy around strangers, she lunged. She is young only 5 months and that also can be a fear period time added to her already fearful nature. She was good for 2 hours. When visiting, it may help to take crate and a chew toy - she she nap in her crate where she feels safe.

Thanks Mary Beth. Do you think a pup can grow out of this behaviour?

No...if she's nervous around people I would not just expect her to "grow out of it."

Find a nervous/fearful dog class and take her to it. It's much better to be proactive about this than just sit around waiting for a "fear period" to end.

You have a mixed breed, one which comes from a mix of two completely different breeds. Sadly, Golden Retrievers have been poorly bred in the past decade and are known for having aggression issues when not purchased from a reputable breeder. On top of that, you have GSD in there, also of unknown origin.

I would really look into a behaviorist or another trainer that understands how to deal with fearful or aggressive dogs. The earlier you start, the better for her.
