Default Puppy is a digger!

Hans (15 wks old) has started digging up our yard. He won't touch the areas where there is grass, but there are a few areas where there is just dirt (like under trees or next to the deck where we will be rolling out sod later this spring). He runs to those areas and digs down deep like a maniac...huge holes! He also seems to eat some of the dirt (sigh).

Any tips on how what to do?

My female did that when she was bored. Someone told me a "tired dog is a good dog". What worked for me was throwing some kibble scattered on the ground and she had to find it, fetch, loves the jolly ball and we use a tug a lot. Just an idea...

Our late large GSD, Jagger, used to love to dig holes, our yard looked like a minefield, because he would dig huge holes. The only thing I could do was to fill them back in when he wasn't around to watch- as soon as he found out what I had done, he just dug them again. Anyway, he had such intense enjoyment from digging them I just let him have the fun. Now that he's gone I miss that fun- some dogs just love to dig!!!! Bob

I allow one area in my back yard for digging. The dogs like to lay in the freshly dug holes when it gets hot out. Normally, once a week or so, I'll just rake the dirt back into the holes (there are three). Sometimes, we'll bring in extra dirt and cover them up.

If one of the more cheeky dogs decide to start digging in a non-dig zone, I'll put the poop that I've picked up into the hole and cover it with dirt. It will then remain a non-dig zone.

I never thought of this... this sounds brilliant. Our digger is doing it for the cool dirt, and also because of moles. I think this might work.
