Toy Question

1 Attachment(s)
So my 6 month old puppy has never in a day just enjoyed a toy normally. When she gets a hold of one its a goner within the week. Not sure if there is anything I can do about this extinction of toys around the house, but if there is please let me know! So far she has always had a rope that she ADORES and it has seen better days. Recently I got her interested in playing fetch with a tennis ball but she runs off with it and starts chewing!! Any ideas would be appreciated :) Thank you.

Lots of toys are a good idea. A plastic milk jug, washed and smashed fairly flat makes a fun 'toy'. Our dog doesn't eat or tear it apart, something to watch for.

Make her cute little butt work for that toy! Engage her with the toy - use it as a reward for complying to an obedience command. Allow her to enjoy playing with it, then put it away until next time :)

All dogs are different - Rusty has done his fair share of destroying a toy but he likes to carry a toy around more than anything.

Another power chewer....

We've been through them all. The black kong is what we've settled on for a couple of reasons. First, it lasts as long as anything we've tried and, 2. If you buy one at Petco and the dog chews it to the point where pieces can come off and be ingested, they will take it back as long as you are under 30 days. We make a trip there about every 2-3 weeks for an exchange.

We've also tried the Goughnut which they will replace without question forever but it didn't last as long as the kong, and it cost $5 to ship it back to them and they wanted another $5 to ship it back to you.

I found the Kong Wobbler is a good one - they can't destroy it and you can fill it with really large bits of treats (for smell) that won't come out and a little bit of her kibble and this will keep her occupied for hours.

Also, watch that robe as if she digests pieces of string, it can be dangerous, if it is frayed I'd throw it away.

My dog is ball obsessed so I don't leave balls out in the house. He plays with nylabones and marrow bones, a Kong Squeeezz stick (still going after 8 months). He also has a toy he loves to play with that was a dud as intended, but a total 'win' for enjoyment HIS way. This toy:
He delicately grasped the treat it held and yanked it out, then ripped the ends out. Now he just carries it around, chews on it, and tries to get you to either play tug with it or toss it up so he can catch it midair.

He loves tugging but we don't leave his rope tug out. We play with it and then put it away. Same with his flirt pole. He also enjoys mangling Gatorade bottles. We just throw them away when they get too trashed.

We only play tug or hide the toy in the house. I expect him to settle down and chew something after he comes in from playing outside and not continue carousing.

Right now I have stopped leaving her rope with her when we are not playing and she is not to excited about it. But then I give her the black kong and shes a happy puppy again! I fill it with treats and she goes at it for hours. And of course the blue one has a squeaker in it that she can't get into.

For your fetch problem, try using two balls and in corporate some OB along with it. There are older threads on it, my lunch is over or I'd post a link, sorry.

If you don't mind the noise there's nothing my boy loves more then a empty 20 oz plastic pop bottle. Just remove the label and cap (could choke if cap came loose). He will chomp and play with it til I finally take it away. If I come in the house with one he will follow me and sit where I am until I finish it, then he gets real excited.

That makes sense to use two balls..hmmm..didn't think of that lol. When I first got her she LOVED chewing on plastic bottles. I would make sure it is safe and when it got too messed up I would take it away. I slowly migrated to actual toys so I'll start going back to bottles for a cheap toy :) Her OB is pretty alright not entirely solid but I've been working on it with her. Still trying to figure out if she is toy or food motivated...seems like she equally likes both.
