Potty training with spotting?
Hello and thank you all in advance for your help.
We took home our Male GSD puppy 2 weeks ago at 12 weeks old.
In the first week, miraculously, he potty trained very well with with treats and praise every time we walked him outside every hour. He only had maybe 1 accident in his first week.
Now, 2 weeks later, the puppy is starting to spot urinate at random places. We know he did not complete his urination cycle because when we take him out immediately following his spotting, he usually finishes his urination.
We did previously have a Male Yellow Lab and our puppy is a Male. Is this a possible territorial thing? Any theories or suggestions?
We are concerned that he went from doing a great job the first week to suddenly spot urinating.
No, I don't think it is territorial. It is possible he could have been urinating inside even the first week and you didn't see it especially since he was doing so well. Very few puppies are trained in one week, and your pup caught on fast but is much too young to be fully trained. I would go back to the basics - put pup on a schedule and take him out at regular times.
keep an eye on him and take him often. don't wait
for a signal from your dog. his habits could change.
14 weeks won't be any territorial or marking behavior, and even if it was you wouldn't want it :).
Hopefully he doesn't have a UTI or bladder infection, so keep that in mind.
Otherwise, just go back to your initial housebreaking training to reinforce what you want. It's not uncommon for our pups to backslide in training.
