Default Separation Anxiety ?! ( new 7 m old puppy won't bond w/husband)

I don't know if it's separation anxiety, or would be considered... But we just bought a GSD puppy who is 7 months from a lady who was getting rid of her. Only have had her for a few days now, but she NEVER leaves my side. Jade follows me every where. My husband tries to feed her, play with her, and gives her treats. But she is just too attached me so far. I don't know if it's because she is in a new place. I know she can't be scared of him because he has a gentle tone with her, and firm when needed. He is heart broken because he wants to spend time with her before he deploys. Any advice?!

I agree that this behavior can lead to separation anxiety or is SA.

I would examine the situation and see are you leading the dog with calm balanced energy. Or are you cuddling the dog and talking baby to it. There is a big difference.

The dog should see both of you as strong confident people, so it can then understand it's own place which is subordinate to both of you.

If you nurture weakness in a dog what kind of message does it send to the dog? You need to teach it to be calm and to stay in one place and be able to deal with you coming and going as you please.

It will take time as the dog probably has baggage from it's previous owner.

Research dog behavior. I like 'Cesar's way' for a basic understanding on living with dogs. Our own body language and how we interact with dogs has a huge affect on how they behave. He pretty much explains how to have a calm content dog. Simple theories like Exercise, discipline and affection; rules boundaries and limitations; no touch, no talk, no eye contact for 5 mins upon greeting a dog. These rules set the dog up to respect you and you to lead it.

The poor pups entire life just changed completely, Plus her last owner was a female. So it makes sense she's clinging to the only familiar thing she can figure out, and that would be another female human.

There is always a 'honeymoon' type period when a new dog comes into the house while they try to figure out their new life and place in it. Off hand I'd try to make sure your husband was feeding the dog. Can he take it out for walks without you?

Frankly, maybe even stop feeding from bowls period and instead have your husband walk around kibble and treats in his pockets for awhile would help .

If your husband has time to add any fun dog classes before he deploys that is a great way to bond too.

Any of this possible? Top Training Expectations for Puppies
