5 month old puppy with lots of fear? HELP!
Hi all. Background. Purchased 8 month old GSD from FL kennel however dog was full of fear, anxiety and timidity. Shipped first dog back to kennel. Breeder shipped us a 15+ week old puppy in exchange for the other dog. Dogs are unrelated.
Puppy is of WGSL. She is currently 20 weeks. Sire is Peik Vom Holtkamper Hof, if this helps any. Currently being treated for puppy pyoderma dx'd by vet after she arrived. When she arrived she was o-kay. A bit timid in areas where we feel she shouldn't have been and it has escalated. She is literally afraid of shadows, dogs barking, new people, if you approach her too quickly, if she's caught off guard and the list seems to be growing. We were running around our house in the dark playing with the kids and my husband literally scared the pee out of her. She ran and cowered in the corner barking and yelping. I walked outside early evening yesterday and she ran up to me tail tucked, hunched up like a coyote, growling at me. Her behaviors are not typical of a well bred GSD. Vet said she doesn't appear to be blind or anything remotely close to it? She actually snapped at me today when I was adjusting her collar. We have had GSD's in the past and she is nothing like them. Her fear level really bothers us. She is also very clingy looking for security even when just in the backyard. Separation anxiety as well. She's afraid of the dark when it comes to going out at night also. Is there a way to build confidence or is this poor breeding somewhere in the lines? At this point, I am concerned that she is going to turn into a fear biter. She has had only 1 set of puppy shots and no rabies shot at this point as I am well aware of vaccine injury. She is fed raw in am and grain free dry kibble in pm.
Any advice? Any recommendations? Any good solid trainers in York, Pennsylvania? or surrounding area? Thanks in advance.
I would ask for a refund and give the dog back. THis is not going to get much better and you will not enjoy this dog.
Have you ever visited the kennel to check conditions? It sounds like that kennel might be a possible puppy mill. Don't buy from that breeder again, get your money back and don't accept another dog in exchange.
Who knows what caused it. Might be a genetic mess or it might just never be handled by people in the way it needs to be handled at a young age. This is why I prefer to get mine at 7-8 weeks so that I can establish a primary bond. early.
1 dog like that from a breeder showing fear and anxiety could be an honest breeder mistake. 2 that are unrelated and that kennel has a serious problem.
You are in a more difficult situation and there are thing you can do that may make this better. Not sure returning her will do anything for her and may be strike 3 if they just send you another dog.
Good luck, hoping some of these sites may help:

Since you don't really know her life experience before you got her, it's hard to know how much of this is genetic and if something happened that was traumatic for her to make her more extreme. But there are things you can do to manage the situation and help get her confidence up.
