Obessessive behavior?
A friend suggested that I play with Fiona with a laser light that she can chase. We did and she had a lot of fun. The problem was after I put the light away, she kept looking for it. I kept telling her that it was gone, but that did not matter. I have been afraid to play with the laser light again. Am I doing the right thing? Or is it normal for her to want to keep playing? I had to stop because my stomach hurt from laughing so much.:wild:

I don't do it. The dog will never win. It will never catch the light. I think it doesn't do anything to build confidence. In fact, I think just the opposite will happen.

It is normal that she likes playing this game and would want to continue playing, but I wouldn't suggest it. It can quickly set her up with a OCD behavior, whether it may show as chasing lights, shadows or a combination.
For fast action fun, use a flirt pole. Keep it low and have fun laughing at the antics. |
Never, ever use a laser light with a dog. Particularly a German Shepherd (or a Bull terrier). You didn't know so don't beat yourself up but don't do it for sure.

Thanks. My gut said it was bad, but just wanted to check with others.

You are right - she can become obsessed with chasing reflections and shadows. This can be a huge problem.
Pass on the info to others about the dangers of laser lights for dogs - there should be a warning about possible OCD addiction to chasing moving lights. |
