Puppy eating his own poop!

YUCK! I've caught Rex eating his own poop twice today. Is this a normal puppy thing? The first time it was outside during potty time, so he didn't get much. Second time was when he was bad inside (I was bad too, I let him out of my sight for a sec to get my son something). I walked over to him and saw him chopping on something and then the smell hit me! *gags* I imagine it's a normal thing, since mommy used to do it for him, but what do I do to stop it, or will he just grow out of it?

I'm battling a bit of this too. It's normal. Pineapple and/or zucchini with their food help to make the poop intolerable to the pup. It also sounds like, from what I've read here, that picking it up quickly is useful. I'm trying to attack it from both ends.

go outside with him and watch him. clean up immediately.
take him out more often to help with going inside. when inside
if you can't watch him crate him. going inside means he needs
more house breaking/training.

Someone said at a local pet store that if you feed your dog pumpkin they won't eat their own poop.
